I'm trying to set up my phone to connect via MTP. It shows up simply as "MTP" in Device Manager with a yellow exclamation point. I right-click and hit Update Driver Software and tell it to automatically update, but I get the following error screen. The same occurs when I manually navigate to the Microsoft generic MTP USB device driver. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can actually get the driver to install?

Many phone manufacturers provide software that contains the drivers to work correctly with Windows. No such software? What phone?

It's a Google Nexus 5. Google doesn't provide drivers except for accessing the phone via command line, which I've already tried. My previous phone, the Nexus 4, just worked via MTP when plugged in.

Is there a setting in the phone to select connection type?

Yes, neither PTP nor MTP modes work.

I've tried everything in that thread, no dice. Sorry, should've specified that in my OP.

So this didn't work either? Sounds like you're not alone then.

I tried that specific set of steps right before my previous comment, just to verify. Doesn't work, just returns to being listed with the exclamation point. Manually installing the driver (or telling Windows to find/update the driver automatically) returns the screenshot in the OP--that the file couldn't be found.

Have to ask, you tried this also? It says to use the USB Composite Device driver.

1. Enable USB debugging: Go to phone settings -> About -> Tap build number repeatedly until developer menu is enabled. Go there (by coming out) and tick USB debugging.
2. On your PC, go to your device manager (when the Phone is plugged in and set to MTP), locate the phone, right click on it -> properties
3. go to the Driver tab
4. click Update Driver
5. click Browse my Computer for driver software
6. click Let my pick...
7. select USB Composite Device
8. Finish up with the assistant
(The computer may automatically install the driver, so you may not have to do steps 2 to 8)

My SSD decided to stop working tonight, so I had to reinstall Windows. The new installation detected it right away and I have no problems. Something must've been corrupt with my old installation, which would make sense (I'd been having sporadic issues with minor things).

Thank you for your help, I greatly appreciate it!

Glad you got it working! Bummer about the SSD and reinstall but at least now you have a working system.
