    USB 3.0 Device Failed Enumeration

I have a Seagate GoFlex 1 Tb USB 3.0 drive. All worked good until a week or two ago. Now the drive will not be recognized when plugged into a USB 3.0 port, the error given is "Unknown USB Device (Device Failed Enumeration).

If I plug the GoFlex drive into a a USB 2.0 port, it works. I can plug USB 2.0 devices into the USB 3.0 port and they work. I just can't plug my USB 3.0 drive into a USB 3.0 port and get it to work.

I have tried uninstalling the Unknown USB Device in Device Manager. I've also uninstalled all other instances of it failing to be recognized.

My motherboard has a VIA VL805 USB controller. I've used the drivers on Gigabyte's site and I've used VIA's drivers, no difference. I have the latest BIOS for my motherboard.

The drive does not show up in Disk Management when plugged into a USB 3.0 port. This shouldn't be a surprise since the device is unknown in the Device Manager.

I thought the problem might be with the USB 3.0 cable or the GoFlex drive's USB interface. So I bought a new USB 3.0 docking station and...same problem. The new docking station also fails enumeration. Basically what it boils down to is a USB 3.0 storage device will not be recognized in a USB 3.0 port. But they work when plugged into a USB 2.0 port. To me this seems to suggest a driver problem, but I'm out of ideas as I've tried all the drivers I can come across.

I've searched all over for solutions and I'm not having any luck.

You might just need to uninstall those USB 3.0 drivers you have and reboot you PC and install this VIA_XHCI_Driver_V4.50A_AP .

I've already tried those. I may not have been clear but that's what I meant when I said, "I've used VIA's drivers." In fact, I was using them for months with no issues. Then all of a sudden things went haywire and my USB 3.0 drive no longer works in the USB 3.0 ports.

I'd removed the USB 3.0 items in the past (VIA USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller, USB Root HUB (xHCI)), and anything else related to USB 3.0, and it made no difference. Finally I went into Device Manager and removed EVERYTHING from the USB Controllers section. I then shut down, rebooted, and it now works.

I see that there were new USB xHCI and VIA 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller drivers from Microsoft dated March and February 2014. I wonder if these are what caused the problem after a Windows Update.

The only thing wrong after the reboot is my USB 3.0 card reader was not recognized. I had to unplug and re-plug it to get it recognized. Then it worked. I've had this happen in the past and it was the reason I started using the VIA drivers a few months ago. Hopefully it will keep working.

I'm going to tentatively mark this as solved. Fingers crossed.

No luck. I forgot that I had the drive hooked up to a USB 2.0 port. Uninstalling the USB controllers didn't help. I no longer get the error that the drive failed enumeration, it just doesn't show up at all now.

It seems to me that something in the windows registry might have been preventing that external drive from being detected in your USB 3.0 ports.

I think I may have finally got it. I happened to look at my startup programs and noticed that there was a NEC USB 3.0 monitor starting at boot in addition to the VIA USB 3.0 monitor. I disabled the NEC monitor and killed it in my process list and the drive was recognized and works. My other USB 3.0 docking station is now also working. I don't know how I ended up with both monitors running at the same time, but that appears to have been the issue.
