Try this.
In Metro screen, right-click lower left corner and click All Apps.
Click Control Panel; under Hardware, view devices & printers.
Select your printer by a single left-click. In the thin upper ribbon, look for Remove Device & remove your printer. Back out to Metro.

Unplug the usb cable; turn the printer on.
Click the Desktop tile, fire up IE10, go to HP support and download the latest W7 drivers (if no W7, get Vista).
Click the Windows Explorer icon & navigate to "Downloads" under your name.
Right-click the driver file and extract to the downloads folder. Or, double click the .exe to facilitate the extraction.

Go into that folder, find setup.exe - DO NOT EXECUTE YET.
Right-click setup.exe - Properties- Compatibility - choose W7 (or Vista).
Near the bottom, Run as administrator - Apply - OK out to the folder.

Now execute setup. It should prompt you when to turn on the printer (just replug the usb).

Good luck! And always try a test page.

When I had an issue with my Lexmark printer I found that by uninstalling the software and going to Devices and printers in the control panel, I was able to ADD a Printer and Windows, installs both the USB and the wireless drivers. The software on the Lexmark site supposedly for Win 8 would not work at all.

Windows 7 driver works fine, at least so far - why don't they tell us that! Instead HP just says "a windows 8 driver is coming"
(Of note - I tried to follow pscowboys suggestion to (1) Remove HP 1006, (2) Download Windows 7 Driver and (3) right click setup - but I did not see a setup file - just a single .exe file (perhaps because I used the plug and play download?) Anyway - worked fine with following only steps 1 and 2 :)

I assume HP has a test suite they must run through and pass to certify a driver for a printer on a given OS. They have so many drivers and printers, they likely haven't gotten to all of them. The phrase "a Windows 8 driver is coming" might only mean they finally got around to certifying the Windows 7 driver for Windows 8. :)

I have the same problem with Canon Pixima IP4500. Recently I have installed Windows 8 and Microsoft office 2013. I can't found the printer in the printing area of micorsoft office any more. In the control panel, under view devices and printers I can see the Inkjet printer icon, but I can not choose this as main printer. Anyway, I can not print anything.
A friend of mine has also a Canon and have the same problem. Canon support site and downloads doesn't help. We have both try to install windows 7 driver, but that does not help.
Can any one help us?

I would try to completely uninstall the driver, and check this page for a download to see if it works. The page claims Windows 8 compatibility:

Using the HP Plug & Play driver for W7 and P1006 works fine

Joe is correct. I used the driver, but selected compatibility settings to Win 7 before installing. Works just fine.

Similar issue, but more complicated here...

I have the LJ1018... It successfully prints the test page, and prints from Notepad. But it CANNOT print from Chrome or Acrobat Reader? ... it shows up for those apps, but nothing happens if I try to print from them. Nothing even shoes up in the printer queue, even though the apps see the printer and don't indicate any errors.

Followed these steps and it did resolve the problem.

I did end up with some problems using the compatibility install. However, I've since installed HP's PCL6 Universal Printer Driver (UPD) for Windows 8. It works perfectly and allows access to all the HP P1006 formatting properties as well. I've been using it for weeks now and it is a good solution until HP decides if/when the HP P1006 is worth supporting. You can download it here.

>>>>I had issues with my HP AIO after moving from Win 7 to 8. HP told me to go to their site, enter my specific printer and there would be a download approx. 33MB. I think it was the driver site.
I did and all including drivers works fine. It was a comprehensive download not just drivers as the entire printer was properly installed for Win 8.
I hope you have the same experience in the future.
