    Heat

    Inspiron N5010 Win 8.1 Pro

I was downloading some Linux distros and now the laptop seems running hotter.

I don't think it is related but I wanted to supply all I could think of.

I read it was suggested to run w/o the battery which we have on order as this one is n/g.
I also blew it all out without taking it apart as I don't know how.

W/o the battery and after blowing it out it seems a bit cooler and the fan is not so noisy but still seems high.

Do you have any ideas for a non tech?

    Thank you

What do you call high and is it an AMD or Intel CPU

    heat and fan speed

In layman's terms, the fan seems to be spinning faster or working harder and the vent seems to be putting out more heat.

I have Belarc advisor if there is a place that will help you with information you wish to request.

I also can open the task manager but cannot read or understand it well.

    Intel R core TM i5 CPU M 460@ 2.53 GHz

Max speed 2.53 GHz Utilization 2-3% speed 1.3 - 1.4 GHz after a minute or 2 of use.

This is with the pc running cool after a blowing out with air last night.

The battery needs to be replaced as soon as it comes in. This is a 3 year old Dell Inspiron N5010, R15.

If there are any places on the pc I can take a picture of and send to you, please advise me and I will oblige.

It seems not to be racing this am as it had been before I blew it out with air.

However, it is now beginning to intermittently race and get hot again. I keep the vents open and never on a lap or bed and keep it on sleep unless in use.

As I said, I had been installing some Linux distros to pen drive which were failing until I got home and used my desktop and local set up; then the Linux succeeded. I had tried about a dozen times. It seemed better before that.

I do not know if this racing which seems new to me, is hardware related or software related.

I try to maintain it once a week, running %temp %, checking system restore, check defrag, Secunia, disc clean up etc.

It seems the more I ask of it to do, the more it begins to race.

However, as I said it seems better this am after using compressed air.

I do not know if a refresh or reinstall is necessary. I do have images but they are mostly recent except one I keep that goes way back.

**I just read where bad batteries generate heat but don't know if I run it off of just ac until it gets here if it will be ok.
Should I remove the battery for now?

I lowered the process power management -max - from 100% to 99% and the pc runs fine without overheating.

Would this be a temporary fix or a permanent one?

In other words am I doing harm and should clean the cpu and apply some Arctic silver5 to the cpu after cleaning or will this be a viable fix for the overheating and ok to run this way?

    1. Google for "portable Coretemp", download then run. It should give you some idea how hot is your laptop. For Laptop, it is typically in the 50's. Here's an example:
    2. Disassemble your laptop and clean all the dust inside, re-apply the thermal paste to the CPU (Artic Silver is good)

    3. While the laptop is opened. You might want to replace the CMOS battery as well so you don't need to re-open it in the future.

I have made note of your suggestion, thank you.
Its funny that is the tutorial I also found and will refer to soon.
For now, what do you think of the power reduction by 1%? The machine never ran faster or quieter.

Yes, it does help temporarily. However, the proper way is to disassemble it.
Also, if you are willing to spend a few bucks for an SSD, it would make the laptop run a lot longer, cooler and faster.

Health, age and $ restrict what I can do so we are eeking out and prioritizing.
I do thank you for your help as usual.

Without a doubt, my work laptop (Dell Latitude e6430u) runs hotter and the fan runs a lot more under Windows 8.1 than it did under Windows 8.0. I put in a spare hard drive and reloaded both 8.0 and 8.1 to test and confirmed my suspicions that it was running more.

I am happier with 8.1 than 8 but wish the heat was as cool as 8. I guess we cannot get it both ways.
I have images of 7, 8 and 8.1 so you gave me something to think about.
I don't understand why some people complain about 8 and 8.1
Given some patience to familiarize oneself with both I find them to be more secure, faster and quite interesting, never mind being very functional.
I lost Bluetooth when I moved up from 7 but that was all.
When I moved from 8 to 8.1 I also lost reset and refresh although I made a disc of 8.1 to refresh with.
    Thank you for that information.

I noticed that when i manually set my memory to 2133 mhz (as instructed by gskill, since my memory is 2133 but if i don't change it there it will be 1600), my cpu temps go like 5-8 șC higher. Is this normal? Is there a correlation between ram performance and cpu heat?
