I've put Windows 8 on an older Dell with a core 2 duo e8500 on a g33m02 motherboard, and everything is working fine, except that I am unable to update to Windows 8.1 because the motherboard chipset (apparently) doesn't support CompareExchange128. I've tried drivers from Dell, Intel and Foxconn. I'm about to give up but thought I would check to see if anyone else had come across a solution/workaround.

Thanks!

Thanks Antspants, that was educational.

As luck would have it, this morning I discovered a bios update on the dell page that has enabled compareexchange128 on my system. I was surprised, as I updated bios only a few months ago, also from the dell page, to allow the board to support a new cpu, and thought I had the latest version. Mysteriously, the new version that I found today has a date of 2010. Anyway, I can now install Windows 8.1.

Thanks again!
