mouse/keybd stops working. mouse sometimes "sticky"

    Hey folks,

This is very frustrating and I am at my wits end. I have tried 5 different wireless mice and two wireless keyboards with nearly no success.

    Hardware tried:

HP Wireless mouse. Returned to store.
    Logitech mk320 mouse/keyboard combo
    Logitech m325 (two different ones)
    iHome Mouse (works best actually)
Logitech v220 wireless mouse (very old)
Microsoft wireless mouse and keyboard 1000

With all of the mice I experience issues where the pointer disappears or seems stuck on elements on the screen, for example, the pointer seems to get stuck on the edges of windows. Pointer motion is erratic at best. With the mk320 and m325 mice the pointer does not stay in one place long enough along with the windows scroll up or down a line or two which leaves me with the pointing device version of "whack-a-mole" attempting to click on something. The v220 is a very old mouse and while it works is resolution is fairly low.

With the microsoft mouse it sometimes stops working and needs to be reset. The keyboard does the same and needs batteries removed and replaced. Sometimes that doesnt work and I need to reboot.

With the keyboard on the mk320 combo some keys don't work consistently and sometimes no keys work. Cycling power fixes the no keys issues, moving the keyboard away from the computer fixes the keys that don't work consistently otherwise.

This issue has persisted with windows 8.0 and 8.1 with two different motherboards. At no point has the wireless transceiver and device been more than 5 feet apart and usually within 2.

For logitech I have updated to the latest setpoint and used the devices without setpoint. The v220, while recognized by setpoint, doesn't work with it at all making the pointer motion completely random. I have used different unifying transceivers for the logitech devices and none of those work any differently.

Outside of setpoint for the logitech devices there are no drivers specific to the others. I have made sure windows is updated. Used every usb port on the computer and even used a different with usb ports.

I use a lot of usb devices at random to communicate with my cell phone, usb flash drives and two guitar interfaces (line6 ux1 and fender mini-mustang). All of the other devices seem to work without issue.

What I need is either ideas to further diagnose the problems or failing that known reliable wireless mice and keyboards that are neither MS, Logitech or HP.

I have tried contacting each company regarding these problems. Microsoft was unreachable through a complex phone tree. Logitech doesnt always answer the phone in the number of rings my telco gives to place a call (15), and HP kept transferring me to the correct department and I gave up after 10 transfers.

Any help at all, ideas, tips, pointers, anything would be appreciated!

    Hi jenny4, welcome ...

You obviously sound like you're no newbie to computers so forgive me for asking this but have you checked for Malware lately?

Needless to say, the fact that some mice work better than others is strange.

Hi, thanks for the reply No touchpad and no malware. This has actually been a problem on two different motherboards in the same computer.

Hey this may sound a little "out there" but I just recalled a time, long ago, when a wireless joystick (logitech) I had once was being interrupted by a long range cordless phone I had.

On the grounds you have tried many mice, 2 motherboards, checked for malware, don't have a touchpad that may be interrupting and I assume have checked for any external devices that may be interrupting the wireless frequency and I can assume tried playing with the mouse settings in Control Panel the only things I can suggest is another peripheral is interrupting something or there is a possibility some kind of software may be at fault.

I can't say if it's worth trying or not but apparently allot of win 8.1 users are having issues just like yours, but while playing games. It could be worth a shot if you have run out of options

Microsoft has also released an official hotfix "KB2908279" to fix several mouse pointer related issues while playing games in Windows 8.1.
You can download and install the hotfix using the following links:

Ok ... so ... I removed from the room where my pc is my cellphone, cordless phone and replaced the wifi router with a wired router and powered the wifi router off. Moved the transceiver to different ports. Each time no joy. After thinking a while I remembered
when I visited the logitech site a couple days ago one of the things I read about was potential emi from the monitors. I cannot say for the other devices but it would seem that is the issue with the mk320 mouse/keyboard combo. I connected the transceiver to a laptop on my desk and tested for the issues I had and found the same issues. Without moving the keyboard or mouse more than an inch or two I turned off the monitors and retested input on the laptop and the problems went away. I have no way of determining the level of em radation coming from the two monitors (problems exist even with only one powered on) but it would seem that the mk320 is defective in as much as fcc part 15 says it should accept any interference it receives. I did try some poor-man's em sheilding with some foil and duct tape but dont know where the emi is being emitted and that was no successful either.

More than likely I can get logitech to send me another. Btw.. the hotfix above was not installed as windows said it wasnt applicable.

    Thanks for all your help!

    Hello Jenny,

In my former life, I conducted much formal EMI testing with Bellcore and UL Labs in Illinois and I can tell you that if the inerference is strong enough, the FCC label will not protect your device from interference. This is especially common for devices that operate in the 2.4 GHz range. However, I think antspants was on the right track in asking you to look for possible interfering devices (such as cordless phones) but I would also throw in other things such as microwave ovens and baby monitors if they are present in your house and reside close to where you use your wireless device. Just be aware that many things operate in the 2.4GHz range and it could be any of them or maybe it is just a defective product. I guess we'll know soon enough if you ask for a replacement.

    Good luck,

    my2cents

UPDATE: I should have included a reference to what other things might be interfering so here it is:

Well as previously stated I was able to rule out other devices and nail it down to the monitors that were interfering with the mk320. Logitech has agreed to replace the units .
