Solved Usb hub is not able to extinguish peripherals

Hi!

I have a problem. Few days ago I have bought new active hub (LogiLink UA0096). Hub recognizes devices rightly and I can use them. Unfortunately, Hub is not able to eject them properly. After the ejection Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit (on my ASUS N65VZ) announces that device can be safely removed, but hub still powers the peripheral and LED control proves it. Normally, power should be cut off, external HD (for example) should spin down. And then removal would be possible.

I checked whether the same problem exists when computer is booted directly from Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander Live CD. It doesn't. Hub can extinguish devices properly. LED controls turns off as they should. So, hardware problem can be excluded. I checked the hub as well on my small netbook (Acer Aspire One AOD260) powered by Windows 8.1 Pro 32-bit. Everything works properly. Computer can cut off energy from the given usb port of the described hub.

So, I reinstalled the Generic USB Hub drivers on my ASUS computer. It did not solve the issue. I know that presumably installing Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit from scratch could be helpful as well as so-called in-place upgrade. However, until now, my Windows haven't found any integrity violations. Actually, I want not to reinstall Windows or execute in-place upgrade. It would be too time consuming.

Help me find less invasive method, please.

Thank you

You don't have to click "eject." just unplugging does the same thing. The reason it still has power is because it is plugged in to the hub and possibly reconnected.

My opinion is that unless a USB drive has the "Quick Removal" option enabled for it in device manager, it is wise to eject. Write caching could be active, data loss can occur.
But, having said that, "Quick Removal" should be enabled by default? Which should mean its ok to just remove. I never eject my USB Drives

Thank you for your answers, but not ejecting can't be a solution. I know that theoretically nothing negative should happen. Unfortunately, it is very common that errors within the file system are generated. Furthermore, I don't like to unplug external storages without removal. Spinning disks cut off from energy violently create unpleasant sound. :D

I was examining my problem for the time being. I can add that when Windows is booted in safe mode, hub works right. It means that something within the OS blocks hub from powering off devices. I haven't guessed what yet.

@dukethedj: I think my hub is not able to disconnect devices.

You obviously sound like you know what you're doing, out of interest did you investigate any power management settings that may be contributing to your issues?

Yes, I did. USB selective suspend setting: enabled, if you had it on your mind. I also set "Turn off hard disk after: 1 minute" for diagnostic purposes. Didn't help.

By the way, I turned off every system service I could as well as start-up items. In vain.

I have found a solution. After pretty long examination it turned out that hub couldn't extinguish the devices because was blocked by following Windows' updates: KB2903939, KB2911134, KB2887595, KB2914218, KB2911134, KB2911106, KB2917929, KB2903939, KB2898514 and KB2917929. The last one neutralized also selective suspending of usb devices. It is worth noting that listed patches are not security updates.

That's some very impressive research IMHO; however, could you narrow down the actual cause a bit because I 'm having trouble thinking that all of those KBs were at fault? Now, I know you mentioned one specifically, so is that the one that caused the issue? BTW, what was you actual fix? Did you back out all of them or just one? You also mentioned a few patches that were not identified (as far as I can see). This could be very helpful to others with a bit more detail. Thank you, in advance, for your response.

@my2cents: I did in-place upgrade. The full functionality of hub was restored until updates were installed. So, I uninstalled 52 updates and checked each one separately. Every listed update caused malfunction independently. Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update offered me only four updates (with bugs): Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2887595), Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2903939), Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2911106), Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB2917929). KB2898514 is installed along with KB2887595; KB2911134 with KB2903939; KB2914218 with KB2911106.

My fix: to uninstall mentioned patches. Unfortunately then bug corrected by KB2911106 reappears and USB storage devices are alternately turned on and off. In my case it relates only to Seagate Expansion Desktop 2TB. After I disabled selective suspending of USB devices and HD stopping after given time, it (when I don't use it) turns on for approximately 10 minutes and is shut down for 50. Pretty long intervals. No damages within data system.

@antspants: Thank you. How to send bugs to Microsoft about Windows 8.1? At www.connected.microsoft.com I cannot see the right chapter.

To be 100% honest I had to search for you. Apparently you don't, apparently reports found in "problem reports" aledgedly are tracked by Microsoft.
- WinKey+S type "view all problem reports"

There are some "Products" Microsoft are collecting bug reports for but you already went to "Products accepting bugs or suggestions" If your issue is not in their list, then it would stand to reason that either Microsoft either disagree or are leaving it up to 3rd party driver creators, which would be reasonable.
I would doubt Microsoft would see an update causing problems with 3rd party drivers as their issue, unless of course they are drivers supplied by Microsoft, then your guess is as good as mine.

However, if you find a vulnerability, apparently Microsoft pays out $100,000. I wonder if a hammer qualifies?
