Toshiba laptop doesn't have function key support Win 8.1

    Hello.

My Toshiba laptop does not let any of the function keys operate properly. When I press one, nothing happens. I have also tried holding down the FN key, to no avail. I thought this was a Toshiba issue, but after multiple customer support "experiences" who told me that the operating system was corrupted, I think it may be a Windows 8.1 issue. This happened under Windows 8 too. Toshiba has a keyboard driver for this laptop model for Windows 7, but not 8.1. Is this a common problem with Windows 8.1, and if so, can you provide a solution or fix to this issue? (All drivers are up to date and function key support is enabled in the BIOS)

    Laptop: Toshiba c55-a5285.

    Thank you very much,

    wws

Since your laptop shows no support for Windows 8.1 (at the Toshiba website), have you tried contacting the Toshiba support group directly because it appears that your current BIOS options are just not compatible with Windows 8.1.

The newest drive I find is this. As my2cents says, if it doesn't work, time to call Toshiba.

my2cents, I have talked to Toshiba and after a few hours with them, they said that the "OS is corrupted" and I need to do a full wipe and restore. This also happened with Windows 8 too though.

popeye, I will try that driver, but I have had no success with the previous versions.

Could you provide a link for that version? I can't seem to find it on Toshiba's download area.

You have to tunnel down to it. Bring up the drivers and software page, then scroll down to the Toshiba Function Key driver and click. On the download page you will see other drivers on lower left.

I installed the driver, no dice. I think the function keys might not even be wired to the mobo cause when I use a keyboard tester the FN key doesn't work.

I have a Toshiba Satellite S55-A5295 laptop which uses the exact same Toshiba Function Key app to control the function keys. It worked correctly on Win 8 and still works correctly after upgrading to Win 8.1 so I know your problem isn't that the software isn't compatible with Windows 8/8.1.

I think you may have a hardware issue. Have you ever disassembled your laptop for any reason? There's usually a ribbon cable that attaches the keyboard to the mobo and I wonder if it could be that the cable is not fully seated in it's connector.

Are you saying that the function keys don't operate at all or are you saying that only the Toshiba functions (FN + F key) don't work? If function keys don't work at all, then I would try plugging in an external USB keyboard to see if it's function keys work. If that works then I would look on Ebay or contact Toshiba about a replacement keyboard.

No I've never disassembled the laptop. The function keys (F1, F2, F3) work OK, it's the special FUNCTIONS that don't work (brightness, volume, wifi, etc.) Plugging in a external keyboard wouldn't help because they don't have the specialized functions. Thanks for your assistance!
