Toshiba laptop doesn't have function key support Win 8.1

Hello.

My Toshiba laptop does not let any of the function keys operate properly. When I press one, nothing happens. I have also tried holding down the FN key, to no avail. I thought this was a Toshiba issue, but after multiple customer support "experiences" who told me that the operating system was corrupted, I think it may be a Windows 8.1 issue. This happened under Windows 8 too. Toshiba has a keyboard driver for this laptop model for Windows 7, but not 8.1. Is this a common problem with Windows 8.1, and if so, can you provide a solution or fix to this issue? (All drivers are up to date and function key support is enabled in the BIOS)

Laptop: Toshiba c55-a5285.

Thank you very much,

wws

Since your laptop shows no support for Windows 8.1 (at the Toshiba website), have you tried contacting the Toshiba support group directly because it appears that your current BIOS options are just not compatible with Windows 8.1.

my2cents, I have talked to Toshiba and after a few hours with them, they said that the "OS is corrupted" and I need to do a full wipe and restore. This also happened with Windows 8 too though.

popeye, I will try that driver, but I have had no success with the previous versions.

You have to tunnel down to it. Bring up the drivers and software page, then scroll down to the Toshiba Function Key driver and click. On the download page you will see other drivers on lower left.

I installed the driver, no dice. I think the function keys might not even be wired to the mobo cause when I use a keyboard tester the FN key doesn't work.

I have a Toshiba Satellite S55-A5295 laptop which uses the exact same Toshiba Function Key app to control the function keys. It worked correctly on Win 8 and still works correctly after upgrading to Win 8.1 so I know your problem isn't that the software isn't compatible with Windows 8/8.1.

I think you may have a hardware issue. Have you ever disassembled your laptop for any reason? There's usually a ribbon cable that attaches the keyboard to the mobo and I wonder if it could be that the cable is not fully seated in it's connector.

Are you saying that the function keys don't operate at all or are you saying that only the Toshiba functions (FN + F key) don't work? If function keys don't work at all, then I would try plugging in an external USB keyboard to see if it's function keys work. If that works then I would look on Ebay or contact Toshiba about a replacement keyboard.

No I've never disassembled the laptop. The function keys (F1, F2, F3) work OK, it's the special FUNCTIONS that don't work (brightness, volume, wifi, etc.) Plugging in a external keyboard wouldn't help because they don't have the specialized functions. Thanks for your assistance!

I just did a compare of the two units mentioned in this thread and I do see differences between the two. Specifically, for starters, the latest BIOS version for one is dated 9-26-2013 (v1.20); whereas, the other is dated 2-14-2014 (v1.60):

Satellite C55-A5285 Support | Toshiba

Satellite S55-A5295 Support | Toshiba

Now, maybe the differences in the BIOS versions make no difference at all regarding your issue so keep working with Strollin and I'm sure he'll help you get through your current issue.

Good luck,

OOPs, sorry about that popeye! I guess I was just focused more on Strollin's responses because he had started to make some very specific recommendations. Unfortunately, I have a difficult time remembering everyone's contributions so I apologize again.

Also, I'm glad that you agree it could still be a BIOS issue.

No problem, just pulling your chain, couldn't resist. Strollin mentions possible key hardware issue but then wws says the keys work as normal function keys but just the blue upper functions aren't working. This is normally BIOS and/or driver issue as I know you are aware.

Since the FN key doesn't work with a keyboard tester as Wws reports here, I'm still inclined to believe it is the FN key itself that is defective.

Hi Strollin,

That makes some sense to me. However, since I have never actually used a keyboard tester to test a specialized function key that is primarily controlled by the BIOS, you may be exactly right in your assumption. Its just that I have seen so many FN key issues put to rest by either a BIOS update or an OS incompatibility statement from the manufacturer that I zoom in on that as a primary cause. I also noticed the OP mentioned the following:

This happened under Windows 8 too. Toshiba has a keyboard driver for this laptop model for Windows 7, but not 8.1.

Now, the above statement would imply the OP may have upgraded all the way from Windows 7, and since his latest BIOS version is 4 versions earlier than yours, I suspect there are distinct differences between your laptops. With that said, I am hoping you can guide him through to a final fix but it also seems odd that the OP has already contacted the manufacturer, the manufacturer told him it was a corrupted OS, and they don't even offer a driver for the Windows version he is attempting to troubleshoot.

Good luck,

Hey guys.

Sorry for the late response,I had a few tests at college. I am still experiencing this problem.

my2cents, I bought this laptop with Windows 8 (not 8.1) preinstalled. It never had 7 installed on it as far as I am aware. Should I try flashing that other BIOS? I am a bit hesitant to do so, because I don't want to render the laptop unbootable.

popeye, strollin, This could be a hardware issue, but I personally am still leaning towards it being either a BIOS issue or an OS issue.

Thanks for all your help guys!

Above is a picture of where the keys can be set to "Special Function Mode" or "Standard F1-F12 Mode". This screen shows up when you type "System Settings" from the 8.1 startup screen. The BIOS is 1.60 and the EC is 1.20.

Hey, thanks for the response.

I saw that settings pane, and the box is selected as "Special Function Mode". May I ask what model of laptop you have and what the OS is?

I am running BIOS 1.20 from Toshiba. I see version 1.30 on Toshiba downloads page, but not 1.60. Could you provide a link please?

Thank you,

wws
