I have just ordered a ssd 250gb samsung 840 evo, it is the first I have had. when it arrives and I install in it in my desktop. I plan to reinstall windows 8 onto it. and use my normal HDD for media files and general storage.

is there anything that I need to do differently?like enabling or disabling anything.

If you do a fresh install, you really have nothing else to do. The installer aligns the SSD and turns defrag off. Those are the most important items. If you don't use hibernation, I would turn the hiberfile off. Saves space on the SSD. The command is powercfg -h off. But that's about all.

Do not overly defrag to preserve the longevity of Drive, SSD is a totally different animal, then traditional spinners HD. If I were to use a SSD for the OS, I will want it to be as small . a size as possible, so that I can do a Backup using Windows Imaging Backup or Acronis, That will take a shorter time and less space to occupy in your Backup Dtive for recovery.
