    OUt of date drivers

Hi, I hope someone can help. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 originally Vista now running windows 8.1
I have System Mechanic installed and the other day i ran the driver check and it said i hsd a driver out of date and recommended the update which i downloaded and installed.

Out of curiosity i ran another driver check using a free program called Driver Update which after scanning it came up with 19 out of date drivers.

I then went to the Dell driver support and download site, and it asked for my service tag number which i entered. and then produced a list of drivers for my machine, but surely this list of drivers would be for the original Vista system not Windows 8.1 or am i talking complete rubbish ?. I admit i'm not really sure what to do here all replies most welcome .

    Thank you

    Try the free version of:

    Account upgrade

    & see what it says.

I have used it for a couple of years with no complaints.

    {I have a 3 year contract for it}

Using your Dell service tag would generate a list of updated drivers that were applicable to the OS that was installed when you made the purchase from Dell. Also, many of these driver update programs produce unrealistic results in an attempt to get you to buy their full version. However, I do not use them so maybe David's recommendation is a good place to start. Also, be wary of any free program that tells you that you need 19 driver updates when another one just told you that you only needed one. Good luck.

That's why I suggested trying Driver Max.
    To get another program's input.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Do you really need an update of every language pack of the world. In how many languages do you run your system. Because that are probably the kind of updates this program is talking about.

Always thought Dell was a step up from Acer although I personally like Acer. They do let me pick the OS I'm trying to get drivers for.

+1 on what whs said, most driver updates are just to ad support for newer HW and do not touch anything for what they are intended in the first place. If there's no trouble attributed to old drivers, don't worry, check only at manufacturer's site, they should be safest bet. If there's some update there that fixes a problem, than it's OK.

Driver Max offers drivers from the manufacturer.
    With time stamps.

    But,each to their own.

If said program actually works it can save the not so tech savvy person some time and trouble hunting them all up on their own. I'm sure there are some reputable programs out there but there are also a lot of bait and switch type programs on the go. As mentioned, they inflate the results with false reports then ask you to pony up for the full version to actually do the downloads. If you have a "I made it myself" PC its a little more involved than just going to Dell or HP and getting all the drivers from the one source. I'm not anal about having the latest drivers right here right now, but if I know I'm going to be doing a clean install I'll double check to make sure I have the latest drivers for my hardware on hand before I start. Video is usually the one that's always updated to a new version. I've never been a big fan of these driver update programs and don't use one. If you have one that works and you trust then that's good though.
