Hi, I hope someone can help. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 originally Vista now running windows 8.1
I have System Mechanic installed and the other day i ran the driver check and it said i hsd a driver out of date and recommended the update which i downloaded and installed.

Out of curiosity i ran another driver check using a free program called Driver Update which after scanning it came up with 19 out of date drivers.

I then went to the Dell driver support and download site, and it asked for my service tag number which i entered. and then produced a list of drivers for my machine, but surely this list of drivers would be for the original Vista system not Windows 8.1 or am i talking complete rubbish ?. I admit i'm not really sure what to do here all replies most welcome .

Thank you

Using your Dell service tag would generate a list of updated drivers that were applicable to the OS that was installed when you made the purchase from Dell. Also, many of these driver update programs produce unrealistic results in an attempt to get you to buy their full version. However, I do not use them so maybe David's recommendation is a good place to start. Also, be wary of any free program that tells you that you need 19 driver updates when another one just told you that you only needed one. Good luck.

That's why I suggested trying Driver Max.
To get another program's input. :)

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Do you really need an update of every language pack of the world. In how many languages do you run your system. Because that are probably the kind of updates this program is talking about.

Always thought Dell was a step up from Acer although I personally like Acer. They do let me pick the OS I'm trying to get drivers for.

+1 on what whs said, most driver updates are just to ad support for newer HW and do not touch anything for what they are intended in the first place. If there's no trouble attributed to old drivers, don't worry, check only at manufacturer's site, they should be safest bet. If there's some update there that fixes a problem, than it's OK.

If said program actually works it can save the not so tech savvy person some time and trouble hunting them all up on their own. I'm sure there are some reputable programs out there but there are also a lot of bait and switch type programs on the go. As mentioned, they inflate the results with false reports then ask you to pony up for the full version to actually do the downloads. If you have a "I made it myself" PC its a little more involved than just going to Dell or HP and getting all the drivers from the one source. I'm not anal about having the latest drivers right here right now, but if I know I'm going to be doing a clean install I'll double check to make sure I have the latest drivers for my hardware on hand before I start. Video is usually the one that's always updated to a new version. I've never been a big fan of these driver update programs and don't use one. If you have one that works and you trust then that's good though.

With you all the way. Video card drivers are probably most troublesome, They are largest, most complicated and most often changed and modified. Because of all of that, there's usually few versions before they get them right but after that it's mostly for later versions of same card and there's no gain in changing them.

I'm not savvy enough to locate new drivers.
I would have no idea if they were outdated or not.

I am savvy enough to read the time stamps of & who made the driver Driver Max offers as an update.
So far each update was an update.

& like you said, the video & display drivers are the most common updates.

There are all kinds of variables. Laptop drivers are often modified my the OEM. Especially video if it has a dual video setup. Getting the individual drivers from say Intel and NVidia doesn't always work in that type of scenario. My chip-set drivers for my two desktop PC's are pretty well etched in stone at this point. Video and sound are the only ones I had to hunt up for 8.1. Other than that it drivers for my peripherals like my printer and all-in-one. Where these programs get their drivers from may be an issue for some, depending on their hardware. Newer isn't always better.

Quite a few people confuse a BIOS update with a driver update. A failed driver update is easily recovered from, a botched BIOS update can end up being terminal. Usually, you only flash your BIOS to fix a known issue that is effecting you. I've done a fair amount of them over the years and haven't bricked anything yet either. I'm still nervous doing them though. especially on a desktop PC with no UPS connected.

It scared me so I passed on it.

Actually, even BIOS flashing can be quite safe if you follow procedure to a letter and don't have power outage at wrong time. At time that diskettes were used you never knew if it is not gong to croak at wrong time. Asus Update and Gigabyte bios utility from windows are safe enough to use. Flashing video cards can be bigger problem as their BIOSes can be modified to some extent. Changed this one of mine to get couple hundred more MHz to 2D display clock and better cooling. SSDs, HDDs and CD/DVD drives can be flashed to different firmware, Routers and other communication devices receive new and modified FW too. Actually most of "Plug and Pray" (pun intended) devices have some kind of FW that can be changed, it's just a question of how far you want to go.
