Win 8.1 on P4 Prescott 2.2 GHz

Do you think it would be worthy to install 8.1 on this old piece of hardware or should I go with XP or even Server 2003?

Specs:
MB: Asus P4P-800
CPU: Pentium 4 (Prescott) 2.2 GHz
RAM: 3GB DDR 440 MHz (2x 1GB + 2x 512MB)
VGA: Geforce 7600GT 256MB

Considering the minimum requirements it's supposed to run Win 8.1 satisfactory?

I don't think your CPU has all the necessary features that are required by 8.1; however, you can check for sure by downloading (and running) coreinfo from Sysinternals and then comparing your results to the 8.1 CPU requirements:

I know for sure that my P4 630 did not qualify so I'm guessing yours may not as well.

well i think i'd go for a no becuz win 8.1 is not fully ready and since u have an old cpu u will have trouble with ur company's drivers.
win 8 will or 7 will do for ur pc . win 8.1 won't be satisfactory. if u want to try it out try using it as a virtual machine

If so, it is not even x64 capable either.

Yes, its a x86 CPU.

After a little research I decided to go for Win7 because of chipset driver issues with 8/8.1 !

Good choice. I have a P4 1.5 GHz system wtih 768 MB RAM that works very well on Windows 7 for the light everyday stuff.

I tried using my old P4 awhile back but even at 3.2Ghz it was painfully slow, way to slow for me so I tossed those old boards out.

Compared to the old Core2duo Conroe and Wolfdale CPU's those P4's are agonizingly slow, "just opinion".

You can build a really nice system using the Core2duo series CPU but there are only a couple options for new boards for these CPU's.

If anyone is wondering which new boards work for Core2duo use the Gigabyte board not the Asus asrock boards which suck, I know this after having the PCI slot go out on two of those boards where the Gigabyte board is solid.
