Gang I have been trying to google/research this topic and its amazingly difficult. Of the various newer Windows 8.1 tablets out there, which one is the winner in terms of "docking" - that is, i can simply plug in an external monitor just like I do on my windows 7 notebook - with full HD at least up to 1080p [many are going beyond that spec now].

some have obvious difficulties with this, but for several of the popular newer models like Encore or Miix - I just cannot find accurate, reliable info on that functionality.

your advice is certainly appreciated

as long as they have MiniHDMI or HDMI, then you should be fine.

this may help

The Lenovo MiiX 2 8" does not have any HDMI out
But the 10" does and uses this CPU
ARK | Intel® Atom? Processor Z3740 (2M Cache, up to 1.86 GHz)
This is using the Integrated HD Graphics GPU from Intel

The Encore 8 Tablet
Encore? Tablet (64GB)
is using the same CPU and has HDMI also
I don't think you will have an issue with external monitor support on these.

What you will need to research on those 2 Tablets, is the Intel HD Graphics
It is not the 3000 or 4000,, it's just plain HD Graphics GPU.

You should not have any issues with external Monitor's or Movies etc.
Games will give you some difficulty depending on the game, I wouldn't rely on this for gaming.

thanks for responding.

its not that easy... from what I have gathered so far, some of these do not work correctly. what you get on the big display is a 'mirror' of the little, at its [the inboard display] resolution and orientation with no options implemented to allow one to change that. hence the question.
also, anyone that has dealt with a range of notebooks/laptops with physical hdmi ports knows that many of the offerings are poorly implemented, having trouble syncing with the monitor of choice. in the past Intel HD devices could be very problematic although I am hopeful that their contributions have much improved. firmware work is also necessary for an optimal "now questions asked" kind of plug/play operation

as long as they have MiniHDMI or HDMI, then you should be fine.
