ATI Mobility 5740 video playback issues on Sony VPCEC2S0E

Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I was given a laptop recently which I've upgraded to Win 8.1 x64. On board as the title suggests, it has an ATI Mobility 5740 on board. However, under win 8 there's a strange video based issue that experiencing.

With the default windows 8.1 driver (where it displays "ATI 5000 Series"), video plays, audio can be heard, but the video window is just black. This is via Blurays/DVD's in PowerDVD and MP4's in MPC. Browser based video is fine incidentally.

I then tried the official Sony driver (albeit for Win 7) which won't install. I managed to force the driver in via device manager and suddenly all video's work in MPC video player. But, PowerDVD won't open...so I can't play Blurays. The CCC won't open either claiming "No AMD graphics driver is installed..."

Finally, I tried a modified newer 8.1 mobility driver from Guru3D which installs perfectly. However, on opening a video, the player force closes (in MPC & PowerDVD).

I know there's a way to download the latest CC driver online and edit the inf, but I tried that too and it refused to install

Sadly Sony felt no need to provide a Win 8/8.1 driver for this laptop and I'd rather not go back to Win 7. I see no plausible reason why it shouldn't work. Any ideas?

Thanks :)

EDIT

Okay so since my previous post I've installed the mobility 14.1 beta drivers. They install (minus an error with the HDMI audio), and they seem stable. I've found that it's something to do with the ATI Hardware decoding. If I change the output of MPC from the enhanced video render (the hardware) and change to overlay mixer render (software), it works so I'm happy with that as a work around. However PowerDVD won't work on H/W or S/W :( I want to be able to watch blurays...

Hi, what you can try to install this driver Microsoft Update Catalog first install the add-on and then search for `radeon hd 5000 13.251` and download the third one. Then install it using Device manager. After that download the AMD package Desktop and install the Catalyst Control Centre. Hope this works! If you have questions please ask.

Credit to the above advice and to yourself as well for efforts so far. In fact, I'll even give a "rep." (I think you'd need the 4th one though, since that is for 5000 series and the other just says 5000. It likely will not install because too though, because your hardware id is missing for it - The Sony.)

The reason that MPC-HC and PDVD will not play hardware accelerated video is because somehow, the driver was not installed well or the .inf was inappropriate, or something missing from the driver install. Something along those lines.

In fact, if you had no driver installed at all and Device Manager showed "Basic Display" for the video, your results is exactly what would be.

Try your luck with the above. If you still need help, I'll see if I can mod the latest driver for you. This way, you'll be able to have CCC too since you said you wanted it. (CCC has to be matched to the driver or most often, it will complain and refuse to run.)

All I'd need is the hardware id of the video adapter itself.

And what you would need to do is disable driver enforcement permanently, if you have 64 bit Windows.

My mistake - you should choose the last driver on that page and I think it is possible installing that driver on your card. See this thread http://www.eightforums.com/graphic-...mobility-radeon-hd-5470-windows-8-1-64-a.html It is similar to your problem. Give this driver a try and good luck!
