I've got a 300GB external HDD (WD 3200AVJ) that randomly becomes Read Only (the entire device, including all volumes). It's a transient issue that first started with Win7 and I've tried everything from taking ownership of the drive and removing ALL permissions from everyone else, to formatting/re-partitioning and thus far the only way I can fix the problem on demand is to power it down and let it spin up again. If I leave it alone, it will eventually become write-enabled again (could be 5 minutes, could be 2 days). The drive passes all diagnostics/surface scans, you name it.
I've gotten no help on the WD support site (or anywhere else for that matter) and figured I put it out there on the 8 forums to see if anyone has any suggestions/ideas.
