One way around messing up the factory install is to buy a second hard drive. Put the new drive and then install 8.1. Keep the factory drive in a safe place. Then if you do have to send it back in for more repairs you just swap the factory drive back in. Once the warranty is over you can buy an external enclosure for the extra drive and use it for backup and extra storage.

EDIT: Buy an SSD if you can afford it. They have many benefits when used in a laptop. They draw less power so you can run longer on battery. They generate less heat, always a good thing. That may even get you better battery time as your cooling fan won't be running as often. And the big difference is speed. My laptops factory drive was a 5400 RPM spinner, Now I have 2 Crucial M4 SSD's in there.

Much appreciated, alphanumeric, I am in the process of getting a spare external drive, for backup on my main PC, and my local Staples have a sale on. SSD's aren't that expensive and as you say, work a lot quieter, faster and draw less current/heat. At present just working out prices and suppliers for the main PC as well. I use this mostly now for gaming and trying out new software on a spare internal drive, and if that goes T*** up there is an internal backup/image of Windows 7Pro.

    Thank you again.

SSD prices are coming down so they are getting more affordable. Large capacity drives are still pricy though. My laptop has dual drive bays so I went for a 128 SSD for Windows and a 256 GB SSD for my data. They were both on sale and a lot cheaper than buying a single 500 GB SSD. I put the 750 GB drive that came in the laptop in an external enclosure for backup.

Just downloaded, onto the desktop, my HP Pavilion Service Guide, and it is quite explicit for changing drives, WLAN module, optical drive and memory. 126 pages to print out though all I need are the replace/repair pages. When the laptop does come back, (repaired I hope) I will look into replacing the HD with SSD. As you say quicker and quieter.

Thanks to you, and others a few tips on on this forum will and have helped me a lot.

Well, am I really P****D! off. YES! HP had my laptop back on the 18th. It is now and still in the repair line. Latest status; 'Exception: On hold' ' Exception: Waiting for engineering expertise which required more time - new committed delivery date provided'. Checked by me, on the 19th, 20th and 21st, still the same message. If they can't repair the laptop then supply a new one.

I spoke with an HP engineer yesterday, 21st Tom, and he said he would keep me up to speed and inform me, via email the latest info. Surely a simple USB 3.0 fault should be easy to fix, Nothing, nada. I wish now I had bought a Lenovo or Acer.

I am now going to ring my Credit Card Company and see if they can move it along. This is one problem with buying over the net or by telephone.

This looks like another 5p/minute phone call and quote "The Sale Of Goods Act". The fault has been identified, by myself and 'Mike' the engineer that connected and went through the laptop with me, on the 8th. Could be someone has B*****d up stripping it down. Oh well, at least I still have the desktop.

I am a happy bunny now. Received my laptop, back, yesterday at 17:45 all repaired and working, but with Windows 8. Apparently 'Motherboard' fault. Am yet to try the USB 3.0 socket but will do over the weekend. I have apologised to HP for my speedy email quoting S.O.G.A. I thought they were dragging their heels. I realise new machines/pc's can and do go wrong. Before I upgrade to Windows 8.1 I will, if this is OK copy and print "How To Update to Windows 8.1".

I will now mark this post as "Solved"

Mine was a motherboard fault. At worst, yours could be the same, at best, drivers? USB faulty? Have you gone into Device Manager and looked for the offending USB? Try to uninstall it and then re-start PC/Laptop and see if windows still finds a fault. Other than what I have suggested, could be a trip to your nearest reputable PC store.

@Snapp - Any luck on this issue, I'm also facing same issue could you please let me know if any suggestions
