Solved Apps that need internet connection won't connect to it

Dear Friends,

I am a very un-techy person, so words of one syllable please! I have a Samsung ATIV Tab 3. It has Windows 8.1.

Long story short, my Apps are not connecting to the internet following some disastrous anti-virus faffing about. I've now removed Norton and AVG completely and have avast (but reading elsewhere here, I believe that I should probably get rid of that as well?).

Now, I've got to the point, through your very good forum, of understanding that I need to do this Run CMD 'Command Prompt' as administrator. In the command line type: netsh winsock reset Press enter then restart your PC, the problem solved. So I tried that, but it hasn't resolved the problem. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I am about four hours in to trying to sort this problem out and I'm now thoroughly fed up with it.

With best wishes and hoped for sage advice,

A

Yes, for now, uninstall AVAST then reboot. If it still doesn't work, open a command prompt and type this, then press Enter:

ipconfig /all

Take a picture with a camera or a screenshot and transfer to other computer via USB, and attach here.

In the meantime, scan the machine with Malwarebytes. There could be a malware dns redirector or something similar.

This has the possibility to help other applications on the machine that will not connect:

Internet Explorer - Reset - Windows 7 Help Forums

but also go to Internet Options | Connections tab, click LAN settings, and take away all check boxes. Hit OK 2x and close IE.

Just for the sake of being thorough, the real pro advice is to use Killdisk on the drive to 0 it out then clean install Windows to it. Even if you don't do it, I had to say it, to give "proper" advice.

I have now removed avast, having found out that I have Windows Defender as well. Rerun the command prompt thing above and restarted. Still no joy.

Just done the Internet connections bit too, and.... joy of joys, it's worked! Thank you so very much indeed. Now, one last question, am I ok with Windows Defender or do I need to have anything else (although I'd be loathed to after all of this hoo ha!).

I bow to your incredibly superior knowledge!

Kind regards,

A

Yes, ok, if you refrain from being socially engineered by popups (don't click stuff "just because" or especially if pressured as in "MUST UPDATE NOW!!!!!!" blinking lights lol. You can supplement with a weekly Malwarebytes scan.

Use Firefox.

You're welcome.

Ok, ta. I feel very humbled! lol.

(A hundred lines), I will not click on UPDATE NOW (blinking lights) and the rest of it. Firefox it is.

You are clearly a star. :)
