    Should I update BIOS ?

    My bios is:

    The newest version is P11.B3.

I downloaded the new version from the Gateway site.
    (I have a Gateway computer)

In the 64 bit folder are 2 exe files:

I read all the read me files.
    They did not enlighten me.

Should I proceed to try to update the bios (with your help), or just forget about it ?

I don't want to fry my computer.

    Hi David,
I don't think it'll hurt to try; depends what the update consists of. My BIOS upgrade, (which is 4 years old already), only consisted of a 'hang at start-up' bug fix, which I never experienced so I didn't bother with it.
I was of the impression that the unification process at the bios level took care of all issues through the W7 to W8 upgrade, but I could be mistaken. (hp advised a BIOS upgrade before updating to W8!)
If you try it, let us know how it goes!

I say it's worth it. The difference could mean better performance, security & bug fixes.

The update process seems simple enough. Just make sure you disable any anti-virus software first.

Instructions taken directly from the README.pdf file.

    1.1 Get Acer BIOS Package.
1.2 Copy “WIN” and “ROM” folders including files to a storage device.
1.3 Power on System and press <Del> during POST LOGO toentry BIOS setup.
    1.4 Set [Authentication]->[Secure Boot ]->Disable.
1.5 Press <F10> or select [Exit]->[Save & Exit Setup] to save changes.
    1.6 Boot to Windows.

    2. Run Command Prompt as Administratorin Windows.
2.1 Key in ‘cd win’ (Go to BIOS path , e.g. “E:\P11-A0\WIN”)
2.2 Key in ‘wflash.bat’ or ‘wflash’
2.3 Press <Enter> and start to flash System BIOS
2.4 Reboot system and Press <Del> to enter BIOS setup menu.
2.5 Select [Load default setting], then [Save & Exit Setup].

    My policy toward BIOS updates:
If it isn't broken don't fix it. A BIOS update should only be done if it addresses a specific problem you are having, not just because there is a newer version available. A failed BIOS update, which can happen even if you do everything right, can have severe consequences. Many modern systems have better recovery facilities than was once the case but you should be aware of the situation before proceeding. I have heard many stories of failed BIOS updates. Most did not have happy endings.

If everything is working as you want, why do it?

I have flashed BIOS many times with no problem. Only because there was some improvement I wanted, including modded BIOS to unlock features. Is pretty safe but if you don't need too, doesn't pay to be the 1% that toasts their computer.

I was hoping to get the print screen function.

So it doesn't work for you now? It does go to some obscure folder. I have to look again to see which one.

Dang. I will find it, don't use it that much, I use Snip a lot. I know I never got feedback that it actually worked, just showed up in the folder.

I mean the "print bios screen" function.
