USB device seen on laptop, but not on desktop PC - WIN 8.1

Hello,

I have a strange problem: connecting a Canon Powershot G10 digital camera via USB 2.0 to my Win 8.1 laptop presents no problem (info pops up).

But: Using the same cable connected to my desktop PC, there is no reaction whatsoever. No device manager listing, no error message. The USB ports are all working perfectly with other devices (sticks, external hard drive, wireless mouse & keyboard). Moreover, until some weeks ago, the Canon camera was recognized normally.

Short of re-installing the whole USB controller I am clueless.

Any ideas welcome!

Thanks,
Steinspecht

Did you run it with camera detached?

You can try installing the USB 3.0 driver from the maker's website.

Yes the camera was detached.

The Driver Detective tool (your link) doesn't work, it says there's no Internet connection, although I'm of course online.

When I connect the camera it is as if I did nothing. Normally it switches its display off and receives commands from the computer, but neither the camera nor the computer react in any way when I plug the cable in. The cable is ok, as I said, it works perfectly on the laptop.

Do you think un- and re-installing the USB controller with all attached devices might help? I'm concerned that I can't use the wireless mouse and keyboard (plugged into an USB slot) to log in, if USB is un-installed.

Thing is, I'm positive that I have no USB 3.0 on my laptop, and it works.

Also, I have installed a remote capture driver and tool which both let me access the camera, but Windows 8.1 isn't aware of it: it is not listed in the Explorer, so I cannot access the SD card unless I extract it from the camera, nor does the Canon utility for photo download etc. see it. And I receive no notification from Windows when I plug it in, and it is not listed under the USB devices for safe removal.

So I believe it is something in my Windows 8.1 settings which is wrong, but I can't figure it out

Hi !

Just a quick question ?
Did you see under Device Manager MTP USB failed driver isssue (yellow mark) or nothing ?

Since i was figuring out , why my Canon Powershot SX150IS doesn't work under Windows 8.1 64Bit,
i have came to solution.

My Canon works fine under Windows XP before, so i plugin into another machine with Windows XP and searched, which drivers are there and which not in Windows 8.1.
So i found this, that 3 files were missing in Windows 8.1

-usbscan.sys - copied to windows\system32\drivers directory
-ptpusb.dll - copied into windows\system32 and SysWOW64 (for 64bit version)
-ptpusd.dll - copied into windows\system32 and SysWOW64 (for 64bit version)

You can find all those files online on internet.

and at the end : (found somewhere else on net)
-running CMD - Command Prompt - run like administrator and type "Net localgroup Administrators local service /add" Enter

So, this was my solution for my Canon camera.

Best,
Matej
