Mouse has disappeared following installation of 8.1 patch

I installed the 8.1 patch today and shortly after the mouse disappeared from my screen completely (I have a laptop with a touch pad). I tried going into task manager as just going in and cancelling used to solve this problem before installing the patch but this no longer works. I also tried rebooting (switching off then on again) but this didn't work and the computer didn't even reboot; just reopened my session exactly where I left off even when I waited ten minutes before switching the on switch again. I have temporarily solved this problem with a usb mouse borrowed from a family member but my family member needs it back (and I also would prefer to use the touchpad).

Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas what to do?

I should add here that I didn't want to do the installation when it started happening and while I meant to press the "default settings" option, I think I went with "customise settings" by accident. I just said ok to everything as I had a deadline and needed computer access. Could I have pressed "turn touch pad off" and if so how do I change this?

Hi,

Can you please let us know the make and model of your PC? Yes, it is possible that you might have turned off the touch pad. That will be easy to tell once we know the model no. Like in my Dell's laptop, I simply go to control panel>Dell touchpad>and from there I can enable or disable the touchpad.

Try to update the drivers for your touchpad from the manufacturer's website.

Hi archer - thanks for your reply. I have an acer pc - one of the labels on it says "Aspire V3-571" and it seems to have an "intel core". Is that the right information?

Hi again Archer,

Everything that comes up when I type in "mouse" just has a name that is a mixture of numbers and letters - nothing that means anything to me. I have tried clicking on a few of them but I always get an error messages saying (amongst other things) "self is undefined" and "Microsoft JScript runtime error". Not quite sure what to do next?

Found a youtube clip saying to press FN + F7 and this seems to have worked. Apparently this switches the touchpad on and off and I must have pressed it by accident (likely as I use Fn + F8 a lot to mute sound). Strangely though I played around in mouse/touchpad settings for ages and couldn't get anything changed from there at all. Even if FN + F7 works I would have thought there would be another way of achieving the same thing in the settings menu. There possibly is and I didn't find it but the manufacturer could have made this much clearer! Thanks for your suggestions though Archer!

You could also try uninstalling Acer Launch Manager and re-installing it to resolve any touchpad related problems.
