I don't get that. If it shipped with 8 then should be UEFI I would think. Time to call Acer support and get a real answer. Sorry.
The BIOS doesn't have to be UEFI to install and run Windows 8, if that's what your thinking. I would expect a new PC with 8 to be UEFI but it doesn't have to be. They could have taken old stock and reloaded 8 on it.
No I wasn't thinking that. As you say, probably just older MB that wasn't built with UEFI chip.

That's my guess? My ASUS laptop lists drivers for Windows 7 so it did ship with Windows 7 at one time. It does now have a UEFI BIOS, buts its pretty basic. I don't see anything that stands out from any other BIOS I've used other than the added secure boot settings etc. There are some that would be happy that a PC wasn't UEFI as that makes dual booting with or replacing 8 with Windows 7 or Linux much easier.

Not to mention the Windows key being burned to the chip. A pain for upgrades. I could live without UEFI myself.

I think that was one of those "seemed like a good idea at the time" type of deals. Honestly though, I would think that Microsoft could have coded Windows 8.1 to read and use the 8.0 embedded code if they had wanted to. You can use them for activation so why not the install?
