I am undertaking a clean install with Windows 8 pro 64 bit (managed the update to Windows 8.1 after initial install) and have got to the point of trying to add a network printer, an Oki C3300N. I have found Windows 7 64bit drivers for the printer but when going through the install driver routine, it starts to install indicated by the green install bar going about an inch, then it reverts to install driver screen, ie it pauses after a few seconds.
ive tried clicking it again and again in case it was just a pause, but the driver will not install.

can anybody advise if there is a known problem with installing network printers, or a particular method I should follow to make it work please? I hope I don't have to but a new laser printer just for Windows 8.1!

After further research I found the following on the Oki website which I followed and the printer installed correctly - it was all to do with the digital signature of the driver. Hope it helps others:
Windows 8
Some Download packages from the website contain automatic installers. Once driver is downloaded click on the downloaded file to begin driver installation. For all other types of driver downloads, double click on the downloaded file and run through the extraction process and then follow the instructions below:

1. From the initial start screen right click on a blank area. On the bottom right you will see an option for “all apps”. Click on that.
2. Click on Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Devices and Printers, Add a Printer.
3. The next screen that comes up will show windows searching for your printer. The best thing to do in most cases is to click “stop”. Then click next and you will come to the manufacturers and printers screen. Click on Have Disk and browse for the files just like in the Windows 7 / Vista install. ( In some cases we may not have a driver available for your specific printer so it would be wise to allow windows to detect the printer and automatically install a generic PCL driver). This is on a case by case basis.

If you get a message during the driver install that tells you the specified driver cannot be installed as it’s not digitally signed then you won’t be able to complete the installation process. Follow the instructions below to bypass this and add the printer anyway:

1. Go to the initial start screen.
2. Move your mouse to the upper right hand corner to invoke a right side menu to pop out.
3. Click on settings.
4. Click on Power.
5. Hold down the shift button on your keyboard while clicking restart.
6. Go to Troubleshoot, Advanced Options, Startup Settings and then click restart.
7. Push 7 on your keyboard (disable driver signature enforcement).
8. The printer will now reboot and you will be able to follow the steps above and add the printer.
9. The next time you restart your PC your startup settings will go back to default. If you ever need to add another printer of this type then you will need to repeat these steps.
