Cannot safely eject

Hello

I have a 1T external hard drive. After I copy to it I do not receive the option to safely eject it even though I've ensured all pages and applications are closed.

Thanks if you can help.

Look in device manager Properties for the drive. If write caching is enabled, you probably won't get safely remove/eject. After drive activity ceases and before unplugging or removing an internal from a docking station, I run sync.exe a couple of times to flush file buffers to disk. You can read how it works on the SysInternals page.

I checked and write caching is not enabled. I downloaded your link but I'm having problems; when I try to open it says cannot open in Photo Gallery?? It's 40KB. Thanks for your reply.

Seemingly I need to open it with a specific program. Don't suppose you know which one?

When you say "try to open it" do you mean Sync.zip or sync.exe? I don't get what's going on. W8 should have built in support for either. It sounds like your Registry file associations may be hosed.

Edit: sync.exe is a command line program. Press Winkey-x then when the menu pops up, press letter a to get an /admin command prompt. Type in the path to sync.exe such as C:\Users\UserName\Downloads\sync and press Enter.

Easier to copy sync.exe to a folder that is in your path. Type
Path and hit enter in command prompt to see which folders are in your path.

Sync.zip. I clicked on your exe file, it downloaded a zip file, and I can't open it. I'm a luddite and maybe I'm doing it all wrong.

When you run on command line this is all you see

Capture.PNG

See how to open an administratie command prompt in Tutorials.
Also see Path environment variable.

Your drive letters may vary. For a USB specify the drive letter on command line. If your USB drive letter is x then do

sync x <press enter key>

in the command window

Some things just can't be done from the gui.

The "sync" only lasts until the next file access on that drive, so run sync and when it says the drive is flushed, pull the USB out.

Edit: if you can't get it to act as described, post because there may be some issue on your system. :)

Hey sorry man I ended up putting this down for a while. OK I plugged in my external drive and run command and it just says C drive; doesn't seem to register the USB drive.

If I leave my external drive plugged in and turn off the computer I can't boot up when I turn it on again and the only option is to turn the computer off and on at the powerpoint. Quite strange. Anyway I've decided to leave the external drive in and use sleep mode instead of turning the computer off. Thanks for your replies MilesAhead.
