Installing a usb printer on Windows 8.1

Trying to install a Canon MF5750 Printer on windows 8.1. Canon has a driver for this printer and windows 8.1 64.
My primary problem is that when I get to the point of selecting a port, I am unsure of what to do. My choices are LPT 1-4, COM 1-4, FILE, and PORTPROMPT, none of which would seem to represent a usb port. By crawling through the Device Manager listings, I should have plenty of usb 2 and 3 ports. So my question is what happened to my usb ports. An additional observation is that while the printer and fax functions are installed (though not working) the scan function is not installed.

According to the setup manual, the drivers should be installed before plugging in the USB cable. Did you perhaps plug in the USB cable first? Also I notice some USB is even sensitive to which end of the cable is plugged in first. I've had external drives that acted like dead doornail if I plugged the wrong end in first(but of course the setup info gave no indication it mattered.)

Have tried all combinations of connecting, turning on and off etc with no joy. The ends of the usb cable must in some cases be a real issue because the printer has a type B connector and the computer has type A so that is idiot proof. Any ideas about why nothing resembling a usb port shows up on the port selection dialog during printer instaallation?

I don't mean which end of the cable plugs in where. I mean the computer and the printer should both be powered up with the cable not connected to either. Connect to the PC first. Then connect to the printer. When you connect to the printer you should get the "new hardware found" message and the driver should load.

    Note; fwiw....

With windows 8/8.1, I've found that if I leave all my peripherals connected via USB and powered on when I do a clean install, windows will find and install the necessary drivers and software automatically. It worked this way for my HP 5610v printer and my Logitech webcam.

As to your install problem; I would unplug/uninstall that printer software/driver and start all over. With my HP printer it will tell me when to connect the USB cable and no port selection on my part is required and my HP printer is over 10 years old.

I think it may be that this machine is a kitchen sink device. I read through the setup instructions and there is no such thing as "quick start" with this contraption. It looked like something a technician should install, not a user.

Ok, it has always been the case that if windows auto detects hardware the process is off to a good start. If this happens you know that 1) windows recognized the port you have connected to and 2) recognizes that something is out there. Got this printer when I was running Windows 2K, used it with XP Pro and now with 8.1. Do not ever remember windows auto detecting it ever.
However, when I manually install it there was a difference.
    1. I hit the "Install printer" or equivalent windows scans and finds nothing. Not surprising since manually started scan should find the same as a auto scan. My guess it that the printer is not a Plug and Play - er.
    2. Next is "I will tell you what is out there" choose Canon and MF5700 Series windows is taking my word for this
    3. Then I have to tell windows where to find it and that is the point at which things go off the tracks. Always before somewhere in the list of ports was something recognizable as a usb port. With 8.1 there is no such thing That is the reason I am posting on here. While the printer is old, it is a new Dell computer and Windows 8.1 which cannot list its available usb ports so I can choose them. If I choose any other port type (except FILE and PORTPROMPT) listed the test document never gets into the queue, which is no surprise.
    4. My mouse, keyboard and a Seagate Desk Expansion drive are all usb. They are picked up and recognized with no problems now that I have told Windows it cannot shut down the ports.
So what happened to the usb ports? or am I supposed to throw out my printer because windows cannot recognize its usb ports?
