Devices and Printers Menu takes forever to load

For some reason the green bar goes all the way across the top of the screen before the devices and printers menu will load. In then loads without an issue after waiting for almost two full minutes. This is a core I7 Win 8.1 PC with 16GB of ram and an SSD so it screams otherwise.

I do have a lot of devices on my home network but my windows 7 PC which is on the same network loads the devices and printers menu almost instantly. If it were a device hanging up you would think that the Windows 7 PC would also be affected but it isn't. I will say that Windows 8.1 does identify a whole lot more devices that fall into the category of "multimedia devices" on the network than does windows 7.

I don't really have a good feeling as to how to go about troubleshooting this one?

I have the same problem. It takes 2 to 3 minutes to load. I have looked all over the internet for a solution to no avail. There was some information to set Bluetooth Support Service to Automatic load instead of manual that worked for some. It has not worked for me.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Many people are having the same problem.

Microsoft told me to either wipe and reinstall or wait for a major update to be released in a few months. Of course no guarantees with either and neither seemed very compelling. I wonder if we have much in common. I have a new intel haswell desktop motherboard. You?

BTW, I also tried the bluetooth setting but, considering my board has no bluetooth, it didn't help. No surprise.

It happens to both my machines - a laptop and a desktop. It comes and goes and I've not found any thing that is directly or indirectly contributing to this. Sometimes it does it and sometimes it doesn't. My thinking is; I have some additional HDD's and partitions on both and if they've not been accessed since a boot up, it has to take the time to locate and add them. I have no real proof of this but just my suspicion.

I have my C drive on an SSD, data drive and a couple of backup partitions on a hard drive formatted to 4TB. I do also access an external NAS but this problem happens with the network disconnected and also in safe mode where the devices shouldn't even be loaded.

BTW, mine doesn't come and go. It consistently does it every time.

I did a repair reinstall and now it works just fine. I just ran setup from windows and it kept my programs and settings...all I had to do was update windows.

I was thinking about trying that. Thanks for letting us know. I'm assuming that you had the old-style desktop apps and they were unaffected?

Did you run it from your Windows 8 install or from some installation media?

Well, I couldn't take it any longer...so I did a fresh reinstall. I knew I wouldn't be able to do a refresh as I don't have my profiles in the default location. Sure enough, the View Devices and Printers, popped right up when I selected it. I happened to a Windows 8.1 ISO burned to a usb stick, so the reinstall was pretty quick.

I've got an SSD so I had to manually relocate all my primary folders including skydrive. I really don't want to go through a new install if I can avoid it. Its pretty tedious in my case. But like I said I just have a Windows 8 upgrade and no install media. I do however also have the 8.1 RTM from technet. Does snyone know if I can attempt a refresh and point it to the technet 8.1 when it asks for media? It seems like a refresh shouldn't even ask for keys again although I have zero experience with 8.1 refresh.

Search the forum for how to download a Windows 8.1 iso. In your case like mine, I don't think a refresh will be possible due to the fact you have the profiles in a different location, just like I had. I too did not want to do the complete reinstall BUT, since your profile or data is on another disk instead of the SSD disk, you will not have to make a backup of your data before you begin. Here is what I did in a nutshell:

1. Booted to usb Windows 8.1
2. Did a custom install and installed the OS to the SSD drive.
3. As soon as I was logged into the OS (roughly in about 15 to 20 minutes), I promptly changed the location of my profile to point to the existing DATA hard drive, and all my desktop, favorites, documents, music, pictures, and videos were right back where they started from.
4. Finished installing other software to round up the installation.

Go ahead and do it...you will be surprised as to how fast it is doing a clean install. I sure am.

Interesting. I've been under the impression that actually moving a profile was a bit risky and relocating the folders would potentially cause less problems. If it works though I can certainly appreciate the advantages. Sounds like in your case it definitely does work.

Update: Just found where Microsoft says this is unsupported and not to do it.

The only time that moving the profiles is an issue is when you have to perform an upgrade of the OS as from 8.0 to 8.1. All service packs have always installed for me by relocating the profiles without an issue. Now, with that being said, just because it worked for me doesn't necessarily mean it will work for you.

When I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, I had to change my profiles back to the default location before it would take the update. Again, since my data was already backed up by being on a separate hard drive, all I had to do once the upgrade was completed was to move my profiles back to my DATA drive and there was all my stuff.

However, this time, I did not move all the profiles from the default location as I had before. Mainly because I'm the only one using my desktop and before I had several family members using my desktop. Before I edited the registry and changed the default location of the profiles and this time all I did was change the default location of the following folders: Documents, Download, Favorites, Music, Pictures, and Videos. All of the important OS stuff is still located on the default OS drive.

What does this mean to me? Well, it is pretty simple really. When Windows 8.2 upgrade comes out, all I will have to do is to relocate the above mentioned folders to their default location without actually moving the data, and then I can perform the latest upgrade with no ill effects.

Now, if you have lots of different users using your desktop, then no, I would not do it this way either for it would be a major pain in the you know what.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that explanation. I guess the only thing I'm unclear about is why you now have to move the folders back for 8.2? It sounds like the registry and the profiles weren't changed and you just moved the folders manually with the UI. That wouldn't require you to move them back would it?

The reason you would have to move them back is if Microsoft's installation routine checks to see the if the default user profiles are were they are suppose to be. More than likely, it will check and error out due to the Admin user (my user account) who is doing the install, does not have the folders in the proper location, i.e. c:\users\username. That would be why. Then again, who knows and maybe Microsoft will allow for the non standard profile locations...but that is wishful thinking.
