External Monitors That Don't Strain Eyes on W8?

I have this monitor Newegg.com - Open Box: AOC E2460SD Black 24" 5ms Widescreen LED Backlight LCD Monitor 250 cd/m2 20,000,000:1 (dynamic) and using it strains my eyes bad.

The text doesn't display that well, if you look real closely in at a letter you see that white dots are constantly blinking around the edges of each individual letter. I don't know if this is a resolution problem- changing the resolution in my settings just changed the dimensions of the display area and skews the screen area different ways.

What monitors are recommended for Windows 8? I have an HP laptop but I need a big external monitor(at least 24 inches wide)

Check that you are setting the display at the native resolution which is 1920x1080. Not sure of your intended purpose. For photo editing most monitors default to a very high brightness. You need about 120 cd/m2 for brightness, so your monitor needs to be turned down to about 30% for that. Perhaps that may help. Also for photo editing an IPS type works best as the color is not sensitive to viewing angle. If it is for gaming then you probably do not want an IPS, as they are slower.

Is the strain on your eyes that you're referring to have to do with the size of the objects/text being displayed?

The problem is that there is an ever so slight "flicker" to the screen around text. It is not immediately noticeable but after 2 hours or so my eyes really hurt- when I go away from the computer my vision is just "off".

I'm not sure if its just because its a cheap monitor or what?

As far as I know LCD screens shouldn't have any flicker? They don't refresh like CRT monitors do. If you are using the VGA in and can switch to DVI or even HDMI I would. If you go to Display properties in Control panel there should be an option to "Adjust Clear Type text". Run that and see if it helps.

Do you have a 2nd monitor or can you barrow one and then hook that up and see if it flickers like yours does. If not, then you know that your monitor is bad or failing. I tend to stay away from cheap/no name monitors just for that very reason you've described. I'm partial to my Samsung monitors.

Some LCD monitors use pulse width modulation to turn the brightness down. It depends on the person, but some can see this as a flicker at lower brightness levels. This can be a bit of a conflicting issue for photo editing as you need to turn the brightness down to accurately edit, but it may flicker at lower brightness levels.

I use a 24" IPS monitor, Asus PA248Q, which is good for photo editing. It does not flicker to my eyes at 20% brightness.
