    Duel Core Help

    Quick Question:

Say I have a 2GHz processor that is a duel core, is the 2GHz the overall performance or that of each processor?
    then what about quad cores?

Every core runs on that specified frequency, they do not ad up. Performance for single threaded applications is according to frequency of single core but multythreaded apps can use more cores. Modern OSs can spread the load to cores so there's definite improvement with multycore processors, the more, the merrier. It's not that performance multiplies with number of cores exactly but really helps, specially for multitasking. Some Intel processors have a "Core Parking" utility, so they use just the number of cores needed for tasks at hand, the rest are temporarily shut off until needed.

Adding more cores will improve performance but you will quickly reach a point of diminishing returns where the added cores provide no noticeable improvement. Writing software that really takes advantage of multiple cores is difficult so most software doesn't. Going from 1 to 2 cores will noticeably improve system responsiveness, if not actual performance. Going from 2 to 4 cores the improvement will be much less. Over 4 cores the gains will be unnoticeable with most software. You will just have more cores waiting for something to do.

So essentially a Duel 2GHz Processor is really just two 1GHz processors?

    NO

A dual 2 GHZ processor is essentially 2 2GHZ processors. The number of cores and the clock rate are totally independent.

So If I had a duel 2ghz processors I really have 4ghz of processing power?

No , you have 2x2ghz processors...

Process A runs on core one at 2 ghz
Process B runs on core two at 2 ghz

Programs that have been coded to use multi-core CPUs will run smoother and finish tasks faster than those that are hard coded to run on only one of the 2 ghz cores , but not quite as fast as a program coded to run on a single core CPU that runs at 4ghz.
