Is there any way to read an AHCI HDD from ATA install?

So I switched over to the SATA setup via BIOS in attempt to improve my SSD performance. I knew I had to reinstall on the SSD but my I am not able to read or even format my second HDD that was also in AHCI. Is there any way to (would be awesome if) read, or at least format my drive so I can use it again? I tried disk management and other options within the OS and couldn't format.

it's an MSI 990xa gd-55 mobo. Which I am ashamed to even own because it sucks.

You could try booting with a recovery disc which should get you into an off-line mode where you might be able to use the "diskpart" command. Just be careful:

you can also use diskpart to set its partition id as non system so you can then mess with it.
also why would you set it to sata you should get better performance with ahci then sata, and it allows hot swapping. and you might want to check that your TRIM is working right by putting in an elevated command prompt > fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify and see if you get back =0 if it says =1 then your not using trim and that's not good for your ssd's health.

If you use an SSD, AHCI is practically mandatory, a lot of functions will not work and performance will drop drastically over time.

Have you tried assigning that partition a drive letter?

So according to everybody AHCI is the better option with an SSD. The reason I switched was because it was a suggestion in another forum. My SSD kept going to 100% usage and it kept locking up my computer. Which I realize now is a huge problem in windows 8 with SSD's. After I switched to ata it could have been coincidence but the 100% usage and freezing stopped. I guess I'll reinstall in ACHI format and give it another shot. Sorry for the late reply been quite busy.

Of course that AHCI is better for SSDs, several functions depend on it. Does not help HDDs but doesn't hurt either. I'm on my third SSD on Win7, 8 and 8.1 and have not had any problems of that nature. There could be some problems with having too little amount of RAM so swap file is working overtime. I always made sure that SSD is the first drive, have best drivers for AHCI and installed Windows while SSD is the only drive so that OS would not put stuff on HDDs. You may also try to shut down super fetch as because of SSD's speed is not necessary.

you might be getting locks up because of your ssd itself or because your ahci drivers are not right. what model is your ssd and what bios version are you running on that board?

i have checked to make sure I was running all of the latest drivers, including mobo drivers and everything. However I couldn't figure out how to install the 64 bit version of the intel RST drivers, there is no executable, and when I run the 32 bit version it says that it has to be 64 bit.

your motherboard support page has like no drivers for windows 8 which is odd are you on 8.1 or just 8, also you would not use intel rst as you have an amd chipset. Also could you state what version your current bios is (not your drivers in windows). EDIT: these are what you want for your board straight from amd themselves http://www2.ati.com/drivers/13-9_win7_win8_32-64_sb.exe as found here AMD Chipset Drivers
