So, I just noticed 3 new weird "wan drivers", and I'm not sure how they got onto my pc, anyone know why they may have been added?

They are not weird at all. I have the same ones and you can only see them when you have "show hidden devices" ticked on my machine. I am not on my laptop right now but uncheck this and see if they are still there:

How do you know that they do not even work? I would say it is not safe to delete them until you have a better understanding of why/how they got there and I know that is your ultimate goal; however, I think someone else will be better equipped to get you thorugh this issue. The only thing I could possibly think of that might cause that situation (you think you have) would be where one downloaded and attempted an install of an incorrect wifi card driver but that is only a wild guess on my part so good luck and I hope someone else can help you.

Also they say they're from 2006. Screenshot by Lightshot and my laptop is 2012, so I'm not sure

OK, I have the exact same view on my laptop but mine is hidden. However, when I show my Win 7 version, it says I'm using version 6.1.7601.17514, dated 6/21/2006 from Microsoft and mine is shown as working properly. With that said, I don't think the solution is to remove it. I think to solution is to fix it by installing the proper driver package for your wifi network adapter. Good luck

I don't show them on my 8.1 system, hidden or otherwise. My system is not a Windows 7 updated system.

You may show some WAN devices under Software devices, but I am not sure that would be a replacement type device.

Apparently this problem is common with Windows 8 with many complaints about the same thing. They only show up because there is a problem, otherwise these WAN drivers stay hidden unless you change the view settings.

Microsoft says that they have a fix for this problem and talks about the reason why the problem occurs in the first place.
Code 31 error in Device Manager for WAN Miniport (Network monitor) device in Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012

According the Msoft, This issue occurs because Windows cannot load the drivers that are required for the WAN (Network monitor) device. Because there is no driver associated with the device, it cannot be removed from Device Manager.

One person posted this as a fix:

I FINALLY RESOLVED THIS PROBLEM! This is what I did:

So, to remove each non-working miniport, do the following:

1.Right click on the non-working miniport, choose “Update Driver”.

    2.Choose “Browse my computer”.

3.In the next window, choose “Let me pick driver from a list”.

4.Uncheck “Show compatible hardware”. From the “Manufacturer” list, choose “Microsoft”, and from the “Network Adapter” list, choose “Generic Mobile Broadband Adapter”. (It can be any device the user is allowed to uninstall.)

5.Back in the device manager, delete the device that just turned into the “Generic Mobile Broadband Adapter” device.

Once done removing the bad miniports, reboot computer. Don’t skip this, it’s important. Otherwise there is a change things will go bad again.
