USB 3.0 Not Working in Windows 8.1, but it's Different

I've read a number of other users' problems with USB 3.0 not working, but mine is different!

I have an ASUS CM6870-us012s desktop, currently running Windows 8.1 (originally downloaded from the Store, but I recently purchased a retail full-install version to see if I could correct the many problems). It has several USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports in front - the USB 2.0 ports work fine, but the USB 3.0 ports SORT OF WORK (but they don't).....

When I plug in a USB 3.0 external drive (Western Digital My Passport), I hear the brief music indicating Plug-n-Play connection occurred (the USB 3.0 end was inserted into the USB 3.0 port). However, I don't get a drive letter assigned, nor do I see it in File Explorer, nor do I see it registered in ASUS's AI Suite II/System Information/Disk......but I DO see it in Disk Management (without a drive letter - just Disk 5)!

There are no problems appearing in Device Manager, nor in any item related to USB (none anywhere, nadda, zip, zero) - everthing is working, so when I look for hardware errors (running Hardware Troubleshooter), none are found. When I look at AI Suite II software to un-install Boost 3.0, there is no Boost 3.0 shown that I can disable or un-install, as others have done to correct their problems.

I tried a full install of Windows 8.1 and have the exact same result, yet when the system was originally running Windows 8.0 (that came on the PC), everything worked perfectly!

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Frank

In Disk Management right click and assign a drive letter and see if that helps.

I gave it a drive letter of J: and it then appeared in File Explorer and in ASUS' AI Suite II/System Information/Disk, as well as Disk Management! If I turn off the PC, then turn it back on, then plug that same USB 3.0 drive in, it once again is seen as J:. However, if I use another USB 3.0 drive (exact same size/properties), it doesn't register a drive letter - just like above! I purchased these drives to do backups, so maybe I'll have to assign the other drive as K: (in case I want to plug both in).......I wish I knew why this was only partially working, but at least I have a work-around!

    Thanks,
    Frank

Make sure you have the latest chipset driver installed since it contains all updates for any built in devices on the MB and in your case it is USB3.0.

I am not sure if your Asus MB uses the USB3.0 chip from another manufacturer as my MB is an MSI Z77 mpower and it uses the Renesas chip. My USB3.0 did not work properly until I updated the firmware for it.

    Good luck !!!

    topgundcp, thanks for the reply!

I downloaded the latest zipped chipset for this PC from ASUS and it is slightly newer than what is installed (according to Device Manager/Properties/Driver/Driver Version). I saved it on my D: drive and uncompressed it, then ran the ASUSSetup.exe program from there. According to Device Manager, the version that was previously there was Intel (rather than Microsoft) 9.3.0.1024. The slightly newer version on my ASUS Support page is Intel 9.3.0.1025.

When I ran the ASUSSetup.exe and it finished, I expected to find version 9.3.0.1025, but found the previous version was still there. After shutting down the PC and restarting it, I rechecked and got the same result, indicating that it was not updated. I went into Device Manager/Properties/Driver/Update Driver and pointed it to the set of subdirectories where the uncompressed files were and it came back with a message that my driver is up to date!

So what am I doing wrong?

    Thanks,
    Frank

You did nothing wrong. Sometimes the chipset driver does not get installed properly. Try to right click on ASUSSetup.exe to see if you can unzip it to a folder, open device manager then right click on the chipset->update driver, and select Browse My computer for driver and maneuver to the folder where you have the chipset drivers stored.

BTW, does your MB use Intel Chipset ? if so, you might want to download the latest version from Intel which is: 9.4.0.126

I recently bought one of those pci express cards with two external ports and a twenty pin internal connector and Win 8.1 pro 64 had installed the correct drivers before I had time to put the mini cd into the drive.

You might try deleting the driver in device manager and then restarting the pc, hopefully Windows will find drivers automatically.

FWIW it seems to me that windows assigns the lowest letter available. But if you then try to use another drive you have assigned a drive letter to and this letter has been used previously this session (since rebooting) then it will not mount.

For example I have 2 partitions on a SATA drive in my docking station I've assigned to be D and E. If I undock and put a USB in my laptop it is assigned D. If I then remove the USB and re-dock the laptop then E is mounted but I have to go back into disk management to assign the D partition again.

I'm not sure if this is what is happening to you but sounds pretty similar.

it sounds like the drives just came unformated and you needed to assign a letter to them. also yes it gives it the lowest letter that is available and can cause problems if you have a situation like adamf describes. you have to assign all your drives their own letter to make it not do that.
