with the release of W8, the demand to Intel to make a WDDM driver is seemingly higher...

I personally prefer Windows 7.
I posted my comments because folks need to know that there is NOT going to be any "fix" for this with Win8. Intel announced some time back that the 915-series driver would NOT be updated for Win7 -- so, it's very unlikely that they NOW would reverse themselves and rewrite the driver for Win8.

I don't have a problem with this limitation as I would not waste the time trying to upgrade the old XP-era laptop to Win8 (the one using the Intel 915GM chipset).

To Mark Phelps, I agree upgrading to 8 is a waste of time; sticking with 7 together with the free chrome web app store is far preferable.
However, I am curious to know how an 8 upgrade from 7 would deal with legacy drivers already installed on 7 ?

I obviously can't answer for drivers in general, but when I did this on the tablet PC (the one with the 915GM chipset), it replaced the XPDM drivers with the Windows Basic driver -- and I lost the features that were present with the old Intel driver. In other cases where it found a replacement Win8 driver, it installed those drivers; in cases where it did not, it installed nothing -- the Win7 driver was not retained. Fortunately, I made a point of exporting the Win7 drivers so I could recover them -- so I went through Device Manager and reinstalled the drivers where they were missing.

In the case of the video driver, since there really is no Win8 "Intel" driver, MS replaced it with what it does in general -- uses the Windows Basic driver.

To Mark Phelps: Agreed Intel 910 is a Non starter for Windows 8. It might be the subject of another thread, but I was wondering can you get Licensed Windows 8 for 24 if you install it as an upgrade on top of an Evaluation copy of 7(30 days to activate), or does it only give you that discount if 7 has already been activated and paid for ?

Please can someone post an update to this driver. I installed ver 2 (in this thread), but it still wont install completely, as device manager gives it a little ! mark, and I can't change the resolution or connect to a second monitor.

If your using 8 it wont work. If using 7 try installing with second monitor connnected. If the ! mark is an unrecognised device click on update driver and then go to pick from list. Try Intel GMA function 1 or 0 drivers. If you have done it correct your device manager should show intel gma function 0 and intel gma function 1 under display adapter - uninstall any other exclamation mark drivers under this.. It is not possible to change the resolution on your netbook monitor with this driver; however, you should be able to change the resolution on your second monitor through advanced option and then list all modes. It can only use one screen or the other but not both at once and will crash if you try switching monitors in settings. To get round this I use safemode with networking for using netbook monitor only and normal boot for second monitor only. I got latest drivers through drivermax which is free for 2 drivers a day. If you want it fully working you have to have XP installed instead with official drivers. For some reason, XP on mine wouldnt respond to keyboard so I had to scrape an install of 7 on or throw it in the bin. This is as for ASUS 701 eeePC and may or may not be relevenet to you machine, hope it helps.

Depends on your machine. If you have a PCI-Express Slot or AGP slot or PCMI card slot and a suitable video card.

I was thinking something like this
Amazon.com: StarTech.com USB to VGA External Video Card Multi Monitor Adapter - 1920x1200 - USB to VGA External Graphics Card: Electronics
I already have a vga port on my laptop, but it won't work because of the graphics card, so will this work. ( I am trying to connect to a tv, and clone the screen)
