better alternative than Surface 2 (without restrictions)?

I'm researching this for a friend who just got a Surface 2. I don't have experience with tablets just desktop and laptop pc's.. I don't even own a smart phone.

My friend, Mike, wanted a Surface 2 so he could use the xbox app and control his xbox with it. He also wants to do all the things you cannot do with the wifi over xbox or the wifi on his android phone.

these things include:

Must have detachable keyboard

ability to use a regular torrent client to work with The pirate bay. The Surface RT ONLY lets you use ( the only free) Microsoft certified bit torrent client called RT Torrent.. this sucks because it wont download if the app is in the background.

My friend wants to use a regular bit torrent client.

Surface 2 windows 8.1 RT also Only lets you use Internet Explorer and you cannot install any other browsers at all - no Firefoix. This sucks because 1) IE is ugly and sucks in the odd way it now works compared to all other browsers.. black address bar popping up from the bottom.. and also IE doesn't have a real add blocker and you cannot use add block plus.

My friends wants to use Firefox.

My friend also Must Have Full Flash working (I know it works in Surface 2) He needs to be able to view movies from Viooz.co and movies4k.to - I know some tablets don't have full flash, so I mentioned this.

My friend wants to use a third party start menu to get rid of the metro tiles. RT doesn't let you do that.

I know the Surface 2 is not a laptop but some hybrid between a regular tablet and a small laptop but for 600 bucks this thing has way too many restrictions. The few extra features they charge for the Pro version ( for another 300 bucks Plus) isn't worth the price at all - RT still has too many restrictions.

So what he is looking for is a windows 8 based non RT tablet that has the full windows 8 operating system and does not have Any of RT's restrictions - Yet it MUST also be able to do Everything the Surface 2 windows RT is able to do - stuff like that Xbox app.

After only one day he's about to smash the sucker against the wall. LOL I spent the whole night helping him with windows and thats when we started finding half the stuff we wanted and needed to do was restricted.

For the same price range, what are my friends alternatives?

Looking forward to your answers. Thanks.

What about the Surface 2 Pro? The drawback is that it costs 2x what the RT costs.

Because it still uses the same Rt technology, the Surface 2 Pro still has too many restrictions - especially for the huge price they charge for what what they give you..

I'll justify that by saying.. I can get him a touch screen laptop that will do everything he wants for Cheaper even than the Surface 2 standard edition.

Problem is he must have the smaller tablet size for portability and he likes the snap on magnetic keyboard. He's either got to sacrifice size for power and performance or vice versa.

so i'll add that requirement to the list - Must have detachable keyboard.

Hi Dark Rider,

how come you to say that the Surface Pro 2 uses RT technology? That's totally not true!

The Surface Pro 2 has got a full Windows 8.1 Pro version installed. The Pro is basicaly an ultrabook that can not be folded. You can install whatever you like. You can even play videogames on the Pro, like Civilization V!

Perhaps you should read my thread about the Pro first before saying that it sucks ;). ==> http://www.eightforums.com/tablet-t...st-experience-surface-pro-2-a.html#post282752

Good luck with it.

O.k. so, I was mistaken about it using RT. Big Deal.

I'm not mistaken about it being very expensive for the features you get compared to even a cheap laptop.

Forget the Surface 2 standard and Pro. We are not interested in those systems. My friend wants to replace this piece of garbage.

Folks, I wanna know about other non Microsoft made systems that have a full windows operating system. It needs to be cheaper than the Surface 2 Pro and meet all of my above requirements.

BTW, I don't know where you read that But.. I never said the Surface 2 Pro sucks. I did say it had restrictions and was expensive compared to cheap small laptops that have more power. If that makes it Suck then so be it.

We, at Best Buy, saw a small Asus touch screen pc for 200 dollars less than the Surface 2 and it was just a tiny bit bigger than the Surface 2. (it didn't have a numpad taking up space.. cool idea in my book) Only problem is, the keybpoard didn't detach. All Ausu needs to do is figure how to make that keyboard detachable and Poof... Surface 2 Pro will be the last Surface product made. It would ruin the Surface in a couple of years. My reasoning, laptops are getting thinner and thinner all the time.. soon the line between touch screen tablets and touch screen laptops with detachable keyboards will blur. This will happen. Microsoft needs to get as much money from these Surface tablets as they can because they are about to quickly be made obsolete.

...
What restrictions does it have? It's got an i5 processor, runs the full version of Windows 8.1 and can run most current as well as legacy Windows software. It's an awsome machine although I agree that it's pricey.

It would be nice if you would provide the model of that Asus you saw. I checked the Best Buy website and the Asus models that were $200 less than a Surface Pro didn't have anything close in performance to an i5 processor in them.

No can do, I aint going back there to look at it. We figured it was powerful enough to meet all of our requirements even if the form factor was a thicker and the keyboard didn't detach, but we looked at it's specs to compare to the Surface and his requirements vs price. He knows if he sacrificed the form factor and keyboard for power, he'd get more bang for his buck.

The Transformer Book T300 is due out in late October with prices starting at $349 Now thats exciting to me but im more of a laptop person anyway so this appeals to me.. Now you tablet guys can have a taste of real PC power for cheap. Ya know.. I think im gonna become a tablet person and get me one of these bad boys.

This thing is heavy which wouldn't bother me but it doesn't have a kick stand for the touch screen when it's detached - that is one BIG drawback Asus should have thought of.

Edit: Just found out they make tablet covers with built in kick stands so problem solved LOL Yeah.. I'm getting one.

Hi there
Might not a better idea in your case be one of those "Convertible" PC's -- I believe Lenovo do some of those things as well as the suggestions by a couple of previous posts in this thread.

As far as using bit torrent clients -- the fact you have RT is the problem -- this is a sort of "Hybrid" OS which won't install normal type windows apps. If you really want to stick with the Ms tablet -- albeit a lot more expensive - go for a Surface Pro - since this is running a genuine Windows system almost anything (subject to space and processing power) that runs on a windows desktop can be installed on a Surface pro -- you might find lack of Ports on the device a bit of a limitation if you want it to REPLACE a PC entirely.

Cheers
jimbo

I luv how these guys come on here bashing the Surface and say how there is better tablets out there and then try to find something that even comes close to it and FAIL... the OP posts has so much fail it's sad. there is no restrictions on the PRO at all, it does everything an ultrabook does! there is TONS of youtube vids that show how well it can handle some pretty good games and apps out there! so please keep your misguided opinions to yourself! I have the RT and it is the BEST tablet out there and I do everything I want except install legacy apps, and if I have to use legacy app all I have to do is connect to my desktop via splashtop or remote desktop and I can do some photoshop or whatever on my Surface RT... the Surface is 90% computer! so please keep your BS remarks to yourself, thanks! Now as for finding other tablets with windows 8 full there is a few out there like the Acer w5, Asus and Toshiba which all almost cost as much as the Surface pro! the only thing is the Surface Pro is a little over priced and the most expensive out of all the tablets. which sucks cuzz I think they would do much better sales!

I will say you are mistaken here too. Find me a very low end laptop that contains a 1920x1080 touch screen, comes in under 2lbs, has a Core i5 CPU, and at least a 128GB SSD. i bought my wife a Samsung Series 7 laptop with roughly those specs this past mothers day and it was $999, and is 3.5lbs.

I can understand the point that people don't want to spend $899 on a tablet because they don't need that much hardware. Or, they can get a cheap laptop to do "what they need", for a more affordable price. Both of those are fair assessments. It may not be the right tool for the job.

I have a 128GB Surface Pro. For what it is, it's an awesome little piece of hardware. With that said, I rarely use it. I much prefer the 14" screen of my Dell Latitude 6430u, and I prefer the full size trackbad on my 6430u. In my case, the 6430u was about $1500, so more expensive then the Surface Pro, but it's got a 256GB mSATA SSD, 16GB of RAM and a Core i7 CPU. It has USB3 and eSATA ports which work out great for me as I run lots of VM's on my laptop. But no matter who much I like my laptop, that doesn't mean the Surface Pro 2 is overpriced.

Now if the surface pro had a 500gig HD with 6 gigs of ram like a laptop does, then I might consider purchasing it for $899, at least I feel I am getting my money worth

Yeah, but I don't need so much storage space in a portable tablet, I'd take the speed of the SSD any day. I'd feel more like I wasn't getting my monies worth if the surface had a standard mechanical hdd. Can always plug in an external usb3 drive. And I don't feel the difference between 4 and 6 gb of ram is really all that substantial in a portable unit either.

I agree with you pparks1. The 128 GB is enough for me. I use my desktop as a fileserver anyway. And then there is always the 200 GB Skydrive space you get with the Surface Pro.

IMHO the Surface Pro 2 is the price of €990 worth. Although I still don't know why I have to pay $1300 for it when you guys can get it for $990.
