I'm researching this for a friend who just got a Surface 2. I don't have experience with tablets just desktop and laptop pc's.. I don't even own a smart phone.
My friend, Mike, wanted a Surface 2 so he could use the xbox app and control his xbox with it. He also wants to do all the things you cannot do with the wifi over xbox or the wifi on his android phone.
these things include:
Must have detachable keyboard
ability to use a regular torrent client to work with The pirate bay. The Surface RT ONLY lets you use ( the only free) Microsoft certified bit torrent client called RT Torrent.. this sucks because it wont download if the app is in the background.
My friend wants to use a regular bit torrent client.
Surface 2 windows 8.1 RT also Only lets you use Internet Explorer and you cannot install any other browsers at all - no Firefoix. This sucks because 1) IE is ugly and sucks in the odd way it now works compared to all other browsers.. black address bar popping up from the bottom.. and also IE doesn't have a real add blocker and you cannot use add block plus.
My friends wants to use Firefox.
My friend also Must Have Full Flash working (I know it works in Surface 2) He needs to be able to view movies from Viooz.co and movies4k.to - I know some tablets don't have full flash, so I mentioned this.
My friend wants to use a third party start menu to get rid of the metro tiles. RT doesn't let you do that.
I know the Surface 2 is not a laptop but some hybrid between a regular tablet and a small laptop but for 600 bucks this thing has way too many restrictions. The few extra features they charge for the Pro version ( for another 300 bucks Plus) isn't worth the price at all - RT still has too many restrictions.
So what he is looking for is a windows 8 based non RT tablet that has the full windows 8 operating system and does not have Any of RT's restrictions - Yet it MUST also be able to do Everything the Surface 2 windows RT is able to do - stuff like that Xbox app.
After only one day he's about to smash the sucker against the wall. LOL I spent the whole night helping him with windows and thats when we started finding half the stuff we wanted and needed to do was restricted.
For the same price range, what are my friends alternatives?
Looking forward to your answers. Thanks.
