For Dell I recommend putting an additional link to the Dell FTP Website: Dell Product support
It had explicit Windows 8.1 drivers for some models before Drivers and Downloads. In addition it is also often more reliable.

In that case, you have to look for Windows 7 or Vista drivers. This usually (except maybe for the graphics drivers) are compatible with Windows 8 and 8.1 as well. Download 32-bit version or 64-bit version depending on which version of Windows 8.1 you have. To find out, swipe the mouse from top right to bottom right and click on Settings and then PC Info. If your laptop has only XP drivers from OEM (rather unlikely otherwise you should need to hack system files to install Windows 8 on it), then look at the hardware descriptions (eg Realtek HD audio) at their website and try downloading Windows 8 (or Vista/7) drivers directly from the manufacturer (eg www.realtek.com) There are some tools, such as Aida64 (formely called Everest) that can scan your system and report exactly what hardware you have to help you finding drivers. They even include links to manufacturers' download site! I always have Aida64 in a Flash drive and use it when installing Windows on an unknown system (I'm a Computer Technician). This saves me time finding out which drivers I will need. Of course I keep a copy of the more common ones (Intel Graphics, Realtek HD audio etc) to keep downloading to the minimum.

I hope that helps.

Tip: If you upgrade from Windows 7 to 8 (and then 8.1) chances are most drivers will be already installed or updated automatically from Windows Update, so you don't have to install them all from start. I would only install latest OEM graphics driver to get the full potential of the hardware, since Microsoft driver uses only the basic features.

Big deal! You don't have to wait for HP to give you Windows 8 drivers. Go at their website and see the download section for Vista or XP. If they have Vista drivers, you can use them (provided you download the correct version, 32-bit or 64-bit for your system). If they only have XP drivers, take a note at the hardware models (eg Realtek HD audio) and try downloading newer drivers directly from manufacturer's site (eg www.realtek.com) You can also use Aida64 or similar utility to scan your system and report all hardware components, so you know which drivers to download. See my previous reply for details.

Why would you look for Vista drivers for a HP Pre-installed with Windows 8 updated to Windows 8.1?

What do you mean with Windows 8 preinstalled? I thought the user installed it. The laptop comes with Vista preinstalled, otherwise there would be official drivers for Windows 8 in HP's site. If he bought it with Windows 8 preinstalled, then most likely the vendor should have also installed the drivers. If he didn't he owner can take it back to the shop and ask to do it, for free of course! In that case he must also check if Windows 8 is authentic or illegal copy to avoid any legal issues!

Yes, they're part of Acer but they also have their own Website. You will only see Acer models at Acer's site, no Gateway Models. I know where Gateway Window 8.1 Update is but I'm not an Administrator/Moderator in here. That's why I'm asking so Gateway's Site is added. Here's Acer's Win 8.1 update Site (Acer | Windows 8.1 Update) and there's nothing about Gateway Models. Now here's Gateway's U.S. Win 8.1 Update site (Windows 8.1 Update).
