If you have a Intel chipset try the updater.

    Intel® Driver Update Utility
May not be updated to use on Windows 8.1.

On Asus X550LD notebook PC ( ASUS USA ) with Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Adapter, even though this wireless adapter does not have Bluetooth capability, you can still choose to install "Qualcomm Atheros BlueTooth driver" anyway. I found that doing so after you have already installed "Qualcomm Atheros Wireless Lan Driver and Application" will update the Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 Wireless Adapter driver to the latest version:

Hello! I recently noticed that a Windows XP notebook with Atheros wireless card had problem connecting to the network. It connected before, so probably some Windows update replaced the driver and screwed things up. It could detect the network but connecting failed due to some incompatibility. This issue could also be true for Windows 8 and Atheros cards, so I recommend installing latest OEM driver from Atheros' site:
    https://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-drivers.html

Remember that each Windows version is backwards compatible with the previous version. So in Windows 10 you can use Windows 8 or 7 or Vista driver. The same is true for previous versions, in Windows 8 and 8.1 you can use Windows 8, 7 or Vista drivers. In some very old hardware even the Windows XP driver might work if installed manually or running the setup in Windows XP compatibility mode. That's for anyone considering the free upgrade to Windows 10.
