I've upgraded to Windows 8.1 and my brightness adjusts just fine on my Asus Zenbook UX31A with the integrated Intel 4000 graphics chip. Anyway there was an updated graphics driver that came out through Windows Update around the same time 8.1 went live...

Also, your issue appears to be have been happening with this machine prior to 8.1's release - P400 Touch screen brightness won't adjust - Lenovo Community.

At any rate try windows update to see if you can get the latest Intel driver.

    Good luck

I had a similar problem like belber095. After upgrading to windows 8.1 from 8 screen brightness maximum not reducing at all. I was struggling to solve this issue including downloading and installing VGA driver from Lenovo. Nothing worked. Lucky I came across this forum and saw the suggestion given by popeye. Very informative and step by step tutorial. I did exactly that and now problem solved, I can regulate the screen brightness. I installed AMD Radeon HD7310M now. Earlier it was AMD Radeon HD 7310 GRAPHICS
    Thank you popeye

I am having the same problem (and many others to boot - can't log into my skydrive through the app!). I have laughed in the face of mac owners for years but now I am not so sure.

I am finding windows 8 (and 8.1) about as pleasant to use as an ejector seat on a helicopter

I did exactly what popeye said to do in post, but took into consideration post, but since I have a Lenovo instead of an Acer and ran Intel HD Graphics 4000 instead of Intel VGA, and when the screen came up to choose the driver instead of choosing Microsoft Basic Display Adapter I chose HD Graphics 4000 9.17.10.2817 AND IT WORKED. It's not fixed to a certain brightness and I can adjust it anywhere! Thank you for the help!

Updating my HD 3000 Adapter fixed it, I can now change my brightness, and it also fixed some other things like the Screen Resolution, the Start Animation opening with slight slowness/lag, and other minor errors. However, the only notable problem is how the new little Start Menu icon in the corner doesn't light up when I hover over it now. For some reason that seems to bother me :/. Look at the image I put here, for those that don't know what I'm talking about. ---> Click image for larger version

Huge props to popeye. I followed the exact steps and my brightness adjustment is a go.

I'm thinking the issue, in mine and others who have AMD Catalyst along with Intel HD Graphics, is a faulty driver on AMD's side. Hopefully this is fixed soon!
