    DVD Drive No Longer Recognized

    Hi all.

I have a TSST 208DN DVD drive installed in a Win 8 Pro Toshiba C855 machine. I am no longer able to use the drive and could use your advice and assistance.

The problem began with my always having to reinstall the drivers upon reboot. I found a solution, or so I thought, that advised me to delete my upper and lower filters entries in the registry. I only had an LowerFilters entry for AnyDVD. I deleted it and can no longer use the drive.

Dev Mgr shows drive with yellow excl. triangle (see image #1 below) and this msg under the general tab of properties - Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) (see image #2 below). I have drivers from MS and Toshiba installed (see image #3 below)

I have already uninstalled and reinstalled and rebooted many, many times. These are my current registry entries:

I have uninstalled and reinstalled AnyDVD. I have put back in the LowerFilters key and deleted it and rebooted many, many times. The registry entries look like those on my other laptop with the exception of lowerfilters set to AnyDVD and upperfilters set to the manufacturer's driver (GEARaspiWDM) and that machine works just fine - for about 10 minutes and then overheats and shuts down - it's a Dell - but that's another story.

The drive has never really worked properly but now it's out of commission. I just got this laptop in June.

    Thanks everyone in advance!

Normally you don't need to install any driver for DVD. Windows uses the generic driver for it and it should work.
The quick way to resolve this is to download a trial version of Windows 8 Manager and install it.
On the first screen, click on "Repair Center" then go to "Other Repair(I)" tab to repair your DVD.

Thank you for your help. I did as you suggested and got this screen:

However, sadly, nothing has changed. Thanks so much for your interest. Do you have any other suggestions?

    1. Temporarily uninstall AnyDVD software.
    2. Add a system environment variable: devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices and set the value to 1
    3. Open Device Manager->View->Show Hidden devices
    4. Go thru the list and uninstall all the hidden devices (Greyed out). If asked to delete from PC->Yes
    5. Reboot and let Windows re-install the driver.

    No Hidden Devices

Thank you again. No go. There weren't any hidden devices. I've included here two screenshots from the event log for the drive. As you can see in the second the Problem code changes from 0x0 to 0x13 - don't know if that helps any.

Any more ideas? Could I delete the entries in the registry for the drive as I'm informed that they're corrupt. Would Win 8 rebuild that section on reboot? I don't see how they could be corrupt when everything displays correctly.

Thanks again so much for your help.

    Results of Suggestions

First of all - thank you for your help. I had tried most of these suggestions already but it never hurts to try again.

Here are some of my results:

    #1 MS Fixit

    # Control Panel Troubleshooter

I've manually removed upper & lower filters - repeatedly.

    I tried this solution next:

    1. Run Command Prompt as an Administrator. Type cmd in Windows 8 modern UI and press cltr+shift+enter 2. Type following and say enter
    reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

    Still no go.

I did notice that under atapi there is another entry called Startoverride - here is a screenshot - could this be a problem?

    Thank you again!

A while back, I helped my friend with his Gateway laptop having exactly the same problem. We ended up reset the Laptop back to factory. I would recommend that you do the same as the last resource. However, we can try:
    1. Go to Toshiba website and make sure that you have the latest BIOS installed for this model
    2. Check if they have any firmware update for your CD/DVD
    3. Re-install the latest Chipset drivers for this model. This will re-install the drivers for any built-in devices such as USB, LAN, ATA/ATAPI controllers etc...

If still failing to recognize then I would back up any data then reset to factory.
    Good luck !!!

Thanks - I'll try your suggestions as soon as Toshiba's site comes back up!!!!!! It's been down since last night at least - some tech company!

But just to play Devil's Advocate - is there any way to just have all the registry entries rewritten for the drive? Why should I have to reset anything back to factory? Isn't there a repair function within Win 8?

I think I caused this when I deleted the lowerfilters entry - the drive worked 3 or 4 days ago.

Could I not just delete all the entries for the drive in the registry - those listed above and reboot?

    Thanks again!

Windows repair function only applied to the problems that are Windows related. Windows does not have a complete control of what registry values that have been put in by the third party software that might have caused the conflict and that's why it is always a good idea to manually create a restore point or backup your registry before playing with the registry or install a third party software such as Any DVD.

Since you've already done ADD/MODIFY/DELETE the registry entries and have no registry backup before doing so then the last resource is to reset.
