I'm about to replace(upgrade) my motherboard and CPU with a new one.. I just bought an i7 3770k + MSI Z77A-GD65.
Anyways, after installing it and turning it on, will I be able to get to my desktop? If so, would I need to install a fresh OS? How would I do that?
If I won't be able to get to my desktop, what do I need to do?
I don't know.. Can someone tell me the right steps that will make my computer work as normal?

IF IT DOES BOOT
(WITH NEW CPU+MOBO), CAN I USE THIS OPTION?:

You don't need to do anything, just replace the MB & CPU then start Windows with internet connection. Windows 8 will re-install all the drivers for your new MB and you'll be able to get to the desktop with everything that were installed with the old MB. However, Your license will be de-activated. You will have to activate it again.

DO NOT use the option that you circled above, that option will reset Windows back to factory, you'll lose all the data and installed softwares etc...

So I just install and turn on and Windows 8 will do everything for me? To activate my license again, would I have to call Microsoft?
How come people are telling me I have to reinstall my OS after doing this?

It is correct. I don't know who's telling you this, it is not true, I have done the same thing last month (i3770K + MSI Z77 Mpower) and everything is working perfect.
Yes, you might have to call MS and tell them that you are replacing the MB and you need to re-activate Windows.

NOTE: I believe your MB has 6 USB 3.0 ports: 2 from Intel, 4 from Renesas. You might have to manually update the Renesas drivers and also update the firmware for it.

NOTE 1: To clean up & remove the unused drivers which were left from the old MB. You need to add a system environment variable:
devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices and set it to value 1 then open the device manager->View->Show hidden devices, go thru the list and uninstall all the unused drivers (greyed out).

People on tomshardware are telling me I have to reinstall OS.

I can vouch for the integrity and accuracy of topguncp's recommendations, both current and previous, and I have done the same as well. However, all things considered, there could be exceptions when the hardware and BIOS configuration is so totally dissimilar, the only recourse would be to do a fresh install. Moreover, I find it peculiar that you are the one asking for help and now you are asking a willing forum member to "prove" something to you? Why not just take your issue back to Tom's hardware because it sounds like your trust is with them anyway?

Alright. I'm coming from a GA78LMTS2 and AMD FX 6100.

You also upgraded to i7 3770k and a MSI z77a?

This problem stems from XP and before era, win8 has a lot of drivers built in but there are cases when it would not work although mostly with laptops and some brand name desktops that ask for particular drivers from their manufacturers. I have successfully transferred HDDs to many computers, which is the same if not worse than just changing MB and processor. I actually have an USB hard disk with win8 (before it was win7) that I booted from various computers and used testing and repair utilities from it. It worked in at least 90% of the time.

I'll go with top's answer since he experienced this himself.
