    Hard Drive issue


    I have an Asus k series laptop, running windows 8. I recently got a hard drive failure error, it occured a few times for a week then stopped. Two days later i went to restart my my computer and now it says theres an error and wont boot, after diagnostics it says it could not repair my pc. After trying to refresh pc it says the drive is locked. Any suggestions?

    It most certainly sounds like your hard drive has kicked the bucket, and is now dead as a door nail. R.I.P.

    You'll need to get a new 2.5" hard drive to replace the dead one, then do a clean install of Windows 8 or 7 on it.

    Thats crazy, its not really that old at all. Is that really my only solution? would it be worth taking to a computer store and try to recover any information?

    Yeah, when you start getting a hard drive failure notice, that's you warning to make a backup ASP before it's dead.

    If the hard drive is dead, then there's not much chance of recovering any data from it. You could take it to a professional data recovery shop to possibly recovery some data off of it, but it would be extremely expensive.

    How old is the hard drive?

    If it's still within warrantee, you might be able to get an RMA from ASUS, or hard drive manufacturer if it didn't come with the laptop, for a replacement.

    Hitachi was acquired by Western Digital in 2012.

    The warrantee will start on the date of purchase of the laptop with ASUS. When did you purchase the laptop?

    The Hitachi HDD itself shows as having a 3 year warranty for a retail one.

    In that case, it should still be under warrantee, so you could contact ASUS for an RMA on the HDD to get a free replacement.
