One of the main problems with non recognition of Peripherals is the cables, in particular the power cables. Open up your machine and try plugging the power cable you have in the CD/DVD into the HD and see if the BIOS recognizes it on boot up. if you have to move plug around to get the HD to work wrap a little masking tape around it one loop and try that, often those power cables get sloppy and don't work.
