Can't disable Sensor Monitoring Service

Hey guys, so like many others I am having problems with Windows 8's adaptive brightness feature. It's really starting to bug me, so I've tried to disable it. I don't have the Disable Adaptive Brightness menu as described in this fix, so I followed these instructions.

After disabling and turning off my laptop for the first time after changing these settings (can't find how to restart) my laptop's screen just went black and shut down instead of going to the "Windows is shutting down" screen. Upon turning my laptop back on I got the blue screen error KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED and the laptop proceeded to do a C:/ drive scan and repair. After my desktop finally loaded, I found the adaptive brightness problem not fixed and that Windows 8 did not accept my change to the Sensor Monitoring Service (it went back to Manual start up type instead of Disabled).

So I tried again, and while shutting down the screen went black again, I didn't get the KMODE error upon startup, but my desktop still didn't save the Disabled option change. So I still have an adaptive brightness problem. Anyone know how to fix this? Help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: I managed to disable it, but my screen is still dimming the brightness every so often. Not sure what its problem is.
