Prevent external HD from stop spinning after inactivity

Every time I need to do something on my external hard drive, it has to spin up. I'm using an SSD for my primary HD, so waiting on an external HD to spin up makes me have to wait 4-5 seconds for something to load when it's on my external -- I'm not used to waiting.

Is there a way I can make sure my external HD continues to spin regardless of I'm using it or not? I also notice that I have to wait on it to spin up when I'm shutting down or booting up.

    Hello Altjx,

Usually setting Turn off hard disk after in your advanced power plan settings to Never will stop this.

Ah, oh okay. I seen this option but didn't realize it was referring to the external hard drive, lol.

    Thanks!

    You're most welcome.

It depends on how the external HDD is connected, but some have their own independent method of spinning down and turning off automatically. For example, when they are in an external HDD enclosure.

Ah, gotcha. I've noticed that, even after a little over 15 minutes, it's still spinning... Sweet! . I can confirmed that this resolved my issue.

Ahh, nevermind. I just heard my external HD spin off even with the option set to "Never".

What brand and model number is the external drive?

We could look it up to see if it may have an option to adjust the time for this.

Well, the manual for you GD1000EU is about useless for any information on this.

You could try setting the drive to "Optimize for quick removal" using the tutorial below to see if Windows may treat it like an internal drive afterwards to let the Turn off hard disk after power plan setting control turning off.
If you haven't already, you might also see how it will behave using an eSATA connection instead of USB.
