Another reason PCs are winning out with students: price. Desktop PCs are at their cheapest during September when students are going back to school, Ramirez says, with prices starting at $200 for a dual-core desktop PC. (The iPad Mini costs $329.) “The desktop PC is simply a wiser, more realistic investment for any student this fall,” he says
Yep it still comes down to $$$.

Speaking from experience as a college student, I will say that the right tablet can be extremely useful for college. The long battery life, and portability make them easy to take from class to class, and they can be used as a PDA. That is exactly what I did with an Asus Transformer tablet. Add Windows 8 to the mix (one of things I absolutely love about Windows 8), and you can sync Google Calender with Windows 8 app, so you can alerts on your Windows 8 PCs too and not just your mobile devices.

PCs & tablets didn't exist yet when I went to college but if I were to be a college student today I think I would prefer something like a netbook to carry around to classes to take notes and a desktop to work on term papers and the like in the dorm. I personally don't see a place for a tablet since they are not very good for doing things like note taking due to lack of keyboard (yes, I'm aware that a Bluetooth keyboard could be used but that's harder to use than a netbook with its built-in keyboard).
