Windows 8.1 - USB Selective suspend and USB Mouse - Power

Seems like, ever since I upgraded to 8.1, my mouse goes to sleep along with my hard drives when my PC is not in use. Let me elaborate.

I use like 3 computers on a kvm switch. Prior to upgrade, I just set my Windows 8 machine to never ever sleep/hibernate, and I have replicated this setting after upgrading to 8.1. What this allowed me to do, was switch to the Windows 8 machine on my kvm, wiggle the mouse a little, and the screen would typically pop up right away (though monitor would sleep after 20 min). Now, whenever I switch to the windows 8 machine, even if the screen is not black (ie monitor is not yet sleeping), I typically have to wait for about 20-30 seconds for my mouse to wake up. Not every time actually, just every time I am switching back to the machine after at least say a 10 minute period of no use. I think this has something to do with power settings, and usb devices set to go to sleep after a period of un-use. I am great with this function extending to my external usb hard drives, and do not want to disable this function on those, but under power settings, it would seem to be an all or nothing option.. HI definitely do not want my usb mouse to ever go to sleep if possible, and in the past, this was never a problem.

Is there a way to enable just the mouse in power settings, or am I completely on the wrong track with this all together? Any help appreciated!!

Just a very easy thing to try. I have 8.1 on my laptop and a simple left-click (instead of a wiggle) works everytime. So, before we go too deep, please try it. Good luck.

    Yeah..definitely tried that..

Thing is, there is about a 15-20 second delay, then I hear the beep tone for new hardware connected, then it comes to life..

Check device manager and make sure you do not have the "allow computer to turn off this device to save power." And make sure you have "allow this device to wake the computer" checked.

Good call with that... but unfortunately, both settings were already set that way.. Darn.. Same is true for keyboard.

Maybe your KVM switch has some compatibility issues with Win8? I can't say much more than that because I don't know much about them but I have seen others reporting issues when migrating one or more machines to Win 8. I have also seen many KVM switches advertised as "Win 8 compatible" whatever that entails. Good luck.

My KVM worked fine with 8, but you may be right about 8.1. That was what I was leaning towards myself. Very strange! Thanks for all the replies.

Confirmed, it is not the KVM.. Tested in this way:

I let the computer sit idle for about an hour, then, instead of switching over to it via kvm, I instead plugged in a usb mouse directly into the front of the computer.

I then experienced the same 20 second delay, after which I heard the beep indicating new hardware connection, and right after that, the mouse started working. This is a mouse that I have plugged into this computer before.

Very strange... It seems the computer now puts it's inactive usb ports to sleep or something. I imagine, anyone with a kvm will experience the same thing I am experiencing.

Anyone else using a KVM with Windows 8.1? I am guessing I am not the only one who is having this issue... My KVM used to work perfectly in Windows 8. Every time I would switch over to it, my machine would wake from sleep right away. 20 second delay is not something I absolutely cannot live with, but considering how often I am switching around, it is definitely annoying.

Here is what I know is occurring. There has to be a way to fix this.

When I switch to my Win 8.1 machine via KVM, within a few seconds, all of my External USB hard drives turn on and spin up. I have to wait for all of these drives to connect to the OS and be recognized, before my mouse will become use-able. This was never the case in 8.0. They clearly changed something, and I really would love to know how to un-change it. I have to believe I am not the only one having this problem, and I really think it would be best to resolve it before 8.1 is officially released to the public in mass.
