ok i've been looking and can't find it. where in Win8 is the familiar USB widget that shows what's attaching, what's attached, state, and interaction to stop/remove the device?

    Hello Cognus,

The "Safely Remove Hardware" icon should display in the taskbar notification area whenever you have a removable storage device connected.
If you like, you could create or download a "Safely Remove Hardware" shortcut to use at anytime.

    Hope this helps,

It handles drives [healthy ones, that is] just fine, popping up a drive manager etc and within those panes is a selection to safely stop the drive and remove. but a usb wireless keyboard dongle doesn't show.

    thanks for the help

I Have found that some devices do not trigger an OK to safely remove visual indicator. I have a USB printer that does not give that indication. I can power it up and power it down and the only thing I hear is the blip noise. Maybe it is just not necessary to provide a warning for devices that are OK to just unplug, without any fear of data loss, like my printer (and maybe your keyboard). Just my observation. Good luck.

You usually only get it if it's a removable storage device instead.

An added thought: If the device is not processing data and is not write caching, it can be removed immediately by default.
Check 'Quick Removal Policy': My Computer>right click device>Properties>Hardware tab>highlight appropriate device>Properties dialog box>Change settings dialog box>in new window check 'Policies' tab.
