External optical drives not being recognized by Windows 8

I have a Sony Vaio all in one but it doesn't have a cd drive. I've purchased two and neither were recognized by Windows 8. Has anyone found a USB optical drive that they can reccomended?

What's funny (or sad) is that the suggested accessory on Sonys website for a optical drive has a review on it (the only one) and the reviewer says it isn't windows 8 compliant.

I can't make any specific recommendation because all mine are internal; however, here is a list from that you could browse and if you check the details tab for each unit, the compatible operating systems should be identified:

External CD / DVD Drives, Blu-ray Drives -

BTW, I hope you sent those other two back for a refund. Good luck.

I keep two external drives as backups (ok, maybe overkill, but 40 years in IT makes me uber-cautious), both 500GB USB 2.0. I use a USB hub for them, printer, flatbed scanner, etc. Clicking on Win8's 'computer' to see connected devices will initially ONLY show ONE of the drives - I have to...
