Solved DVD-Rom not detected

hi guys,

new problem with windows 8,

it appears that windows cannot recognize my dvd drive after i used the option in the general menu to remove everything and reinstall windows,

when i check it in the device manager, it reports the dvd drive as hidden, and advice me to connect it to solve the problem, but i am pretty positive the dvd drive is connected since i can press the button and the tray will eject (and if i insert a disk i can hear it spinning), check the two attached images for this,

i have tried everything, like updating the firmware (it only worked once when the dvd drive was detected, for otherwise the update app would just request you to connect the drive to update it), it didn't work (in this case, i can see it in windows explorer, but cannot push the button to eject the disk tray), use the reg. fix found on the internet, resetting windows again (after the first reset, the dvd drive can be detected but i cannot burn an iso disk, so i reset it again, took about 20 minutes, now the drive is just simply not visible in explorer), none of them worked,

the laptop is samsung series 3, this one, NP355V5C - OVERVIEW | SAMSUNG

it used to have this problem (dvd not detected, or push button not responding) before, but usually solves on its own after an reboot, unlike this time which is completely screwed up and i am at my wits end,

awaiting your most illuminating response!

thanks!

Is your DVD drive being detected by your BIOS? If not, Windows won't see it either. If so, try deleting that old hidden device driver profile and let Windows rediscover it. I hope it didn't just stop working right after the firmware update. Good luck.

it appears that the DVD is nowhere to be found in the BIOS, unless of course i checked the wrong place, check the picture,

the first tab (systeminfo) seems to be the only one relevant here, and there are no sub-menus etc.,

does that mean the DVD drive is damaged? but it doesn't appear so, you can still hear it spinning at the beginning of each reboot (i assume that means it is self-testing),

by and large you are correct, it was still on and off haphazardly before the firmware update (as found on their website, http://www.tsstodd.com/eng/firmware/fwdownload/?functionvalue=view&no=723), after the update however, it does show the dvd drive correctly as a "DVDROM" in the explorer, but pressing the button no longer eject the tray or give any response, i thought i could give windows a fresh re-install and update the firmware again, but now the only place i can find is in the hidden part of the device manager,

looks like a lost cause!

If the SATA cable has not detached, I'm afraid you are looking at replacing the optical drive. Just because it mechanically spins does not mean that it should work. Sorry to deliver the bad news. Good luck. Please consider marking this thread as solved if this information has helped you to isolate your issue.

hmm.. could it be that the SATA cable was loose?

also, if it was not detected by BIOS, how could it be detected by windows, though not visible in explorer, it does however manage to identify the dvd row as a hidden item in the device manager

That is a left over profile from a previous detection when it was detectable. Neither your bios nor windows is detecting it now.

actually the hidden dvd drive was there in the device manager immediately after the system reset, so unless windows somehow carried over the records of detection from its predecessor, it must have detected the malfunctioning dvd drive during the reset process,

anyways, thanks for your efforts, i guess from now on i will just consider the dvd drive an decorative object, given i rarely use it after all;)

I had this same problem suddenly occur & I rarely use the DVD-Rom drive (basically only use it for installing software from installation disk). I do not at all know what caused the problem but I read on the internet about microsoft fix-it for DVD/CD drives which resets the values...deletes the upper & lower filters. This got it to recognize...though I noticed other glitches beforehand. When I inserted a DVD movie (all hollywood films of varying sorts) they would not read. I tinkered around with reading various troubleshooters on this & eventually got the E:// drive to show up on my pc & the name of the movie inserted would display...but when I right clicked to "play" things would hang. Windows explorer became unresponsive & I'd get a notice to end the app. More tinkering & eventually I got the drive to minimally read a disk. But here's the catch...the theater sound or film studio intro, 15 seconds long, is the only thing which came on screen using my media player...& it stopped playing at the 13 second mark (didn't complete the full 15). More tinkering & learning about Windows 8 not being equipped for playing media despite having DVD-Rom drives etc. Overall, had the computer almost 17 months. Could play any type of disk...no problems. Pop in a DVD & cyberlink immediately went to work & I had great HD video & sound. Now I'm having an immense headache...nothing will PLAY. I read instructions about the carriage being stuck & something about cleaning gently around the lazer, delicately push the arm back....it would realign & search out the proper position on inserted disk & everyone raved about this being the cure all to fix it. I tried this & really HOPED for same result. NOPE! It read the first 13 of 15 seconds for the theater logo...then nothing...everything HUNG, Windows explorer app unresponsive "end or cancel". I'm back to the beginning. This is madness! ARRGHHHH...please advise.
