How to reset BIOS for new HDD

Hi,

A while ago I tried to put a new HDD in my laptop and got a message saying something a long the lines that the disk wasn't recognised (forgot exact message)

I took the computer to my computer repair shop and they installed the HDD I asked them if it would be easy for me to do it and they said yes it was just a case of resetting the BIOS.

Can anybody please tell me how to reset the BIOS so I can install a new HDD?

I've installed HDD's in windows 7 machines and it was just a case of inserting the disk- I didn't have to mess with the BIOS!

TIA,

regards,

Ken.

Check your BIOS to see if the hard drive detection is set to "auto." If so, your hard drive should have already been detected. If your hard drive is not recognized by the BIOS, take it back to the repair shop. What makes you think the BIOS is not already recognizing your new HD? Did you try inserting the installation disk? If so, what happened?

This problem lies entirely within the computer and it's BIOS. Laptop manual should tell you how to enter BIOS settings. There you have to set first boot device to HDD if windows is already installed on it. If not, than you have to set first boot device to whatever device you are using to install OS from. install OS and than change again to HDD.

thanks but need further assistance!

Thanks for the replies.

I should have posted this thread on a Windows 7 forum because the operating system I'm trying to install is Windows 7. I posted here because the computer is a "Windows 8 machine" if there is such a thing. Because the machine has been designed for Windows 8, I thought the question would be better suited to a Windows 8 forum. I think I would be criticised and cause confusion which ever forum I posted to! please forgive me.

Thanks to your replies i have installed Windows 7 but it has not installed correctly-it will not go on-line, several drivers are not working correctly and when i play MP4's the quality is very poor and it is jumpy and has lines!

Have you got any advice as to what might be causing these problems before I post this question on a Windows 7 forum?

Windows 8 works fine on another HDD installed on this laptop and the HDD works fine on another computer with Windows 7 installed so the HDD isn't faulty. the reason I want Windows 7 on this laptop is because I have some software that isn't compatible with Windows 8.

TIA,

regards,

Ken.

There's no such thing like Windows 8 or whatever machine except the MS ones running Win RT. Most problems with laptops are drivers for all OSs. The same model could have different parts of hardware and in some cases I run into wrong drivers on the installation disks. You have to find drivers directly from manufacturer and try them one by one. I'm afraid there's just no easy way, that is why there's usually a backup partition on the HDD.

There is often a difference between OEM Windows 8 PC's and OEM Windows 7 PC's. Most if not all OEM Windows 8 PC's will have a UEFI BIOS. It's not a stretch to say there are Windows 8 devices and Windows 7 devices. If a PC originally came with Windows 8 and a UEFI BIOS you'll have to change one or two BIOS settings to install Windows 7 on that PC. I do believe you have to at least turn secure boot off or Windows 7 will not install. It's not a "BIOS reset" per say but you will have to change some settings.

Win 7 doesn't install properly on "Win 8 machine" Solved - Windows 7 Help Forums

I posted this problem to Windows 8 forum where theog kindly replied, can theog explain over there how my problem was solved before I mark it as solved?

Some OEM manufacturers are locking end-users out of the options in UEFI/ BIOS firmware on consumer PC’s, to install other OS's in UEFI mode, so you can only install Legacy mode, on business PC’s there not.

Windows Hardware Certification Requirements for Client and Server Systems

Microsoft said:
Mandatory. On non-ARM systems, the platform MUST implement the ability for a physically present user to select between two Secure Boot modes in firmware setup: "Custom" and "Standard". Custom Mode allows for more flexibility as specified in the following:

It shall be possible for a physically present user to use the Custom Mode firmware setup option to modify the contents of the Secure Boot signature databases and the PK. This may be implemented by simply providing the option to clear all Secure Boot databases (PK, KEK, db, dbx), which puts the system into setup mode.

If the user ends up deleting the PK then, upon exiting the Custom Mode firmware setup, the system is operating in Setup Mode with SecureBoot turned off.

The firmware setup shall indicate if Secure Boot is turned on, and if it is operated in Standard or Custom Mode. The firmware setup must provide an option to return from Custom to Standard Mode which restores the factory defaults. On an ARM system, it is forbidden to enable Custom Mode. Only Standard Mode may be enabled.
