    Can't install all drivers

I have an Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe. It replaces a motherboard that failed. I have moved the Win 7 image over to the new board using a "restore to other hardware" feature in a backup program. It did not work properly. I am not able to get some drivers to install. For various (and sufficient) reasons I really really don't want to do a clean install. When I first booted, it would not even boot until I used Win PE to repair the boot. Various squirrely things are still wrong. Like not being able to see more than one hard drive. Occasional crashes for no obvious reason.

For an SATA controller when I run update driver or running the Intel INF setup program provided by Asus I get a message:

    7 series/C216 SATA AHCI controller 1E02
Also This operation requires an interactive windows station

I have just run the Intel update program and it says it can't identify a device an I need to contact the board manufacturer.

An alternative I am considering is to install a Win 8 update over the Win 7 telling Win 8 to retain my programs, settings, and data. But I am not sure this will get me where I want to go. My major question about that is
will the Win 8 installation be clever enough to use all of the driver files from Asus that I have downloaded (and I point it to) rather than installing something like the incorrect ones currently installed? If someone could answer that it would be a real help.

I would also gratefully investigate any suggested alternatives.

As far as Windows 7 goes, you could try this Repair Install - Windows 7 Help Forums How big of a hardware change was this? Big changes like the motherboard chip-set can really throw a wrench in things. I would not try to do an upgrade to Windows 8 with 7 running like that. Things could get a lot worse.

Thanks, but it is the situation I am in. I need to know what Win 8 will do in these circumstances. I have used repair. Multiple times. The change is significant - P55 to P77

I've seen countless threads on problems after doing an upgrade install. And a lot of these were mostly stable systems with no problems. Have you got all your important files on that PC backed up? If not I would before you do anything. I don't know what's going to happen if you try the upgrade to 8. You might get lucky but I'd be surprised if it doesn't get worse. A lot worse. Me personally I'd do a clean install. If you have nothing to lose you can go for it, just be prepared for the worst.

I don't know what program you used, but a while back, I did a similar thing and used Macrium Reflect Redeploy option. In that case, you stuck the "old" hard drive into a new PC, but you booted the PC into a CD containing MR, and you chose the new hardware option. Then, you stuck in a CD (or in my case, a USB stick) containing the drivers the new PC needed, and MR automatically uninstalled all the "old" drivers and installed all the "new" drivers. When I rebooted, the PC was ready to go.

Yes, that was the software and what I did. After it processed things, it would not even boot. Then used Win recovery. and it is a mess but running.
